Starts at the 50 second mark.

Please reply in this thread if you actually watched her response to the question and think she had a clue who Hamas is, and where the Gaza strip is.

I think the first time I learned about Israel, Gaza, Palestine, Hamas, etc., was back in Middle School social studies. Any basic primary school discussion about that region in the world discusses these basic groups, their basic history, and their significance to the Middle East. Since I started reading newspapers and watching news broadcasts in my tweens, I've come across hundreds of articles and stories discussing this very same issue.

Sarah Palin answered that basic question like a person who had no idea who/what/where Hamas/Gaza is. John McCain elected Sarah Palin to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency, and she doesn't even know the basics about one of the oldest international conflicts of our generation.

My answer to Katie Couric's question:

Democracy transcends being an American principle - it's a universal principle for people. We need to support the principle of democracy for all, even those who are our enemies.

We have other means for dealing with enemies than to deny them democracy and install a tyrant over them who will be our proxy dictator - and we may find we have a lot fewer enemies if we do so. We can change our trade policies, use carrots and sticks - and for those who commit wrongful violence, we can respond with force. There are times in our history among the many times we have faced this choice when we chose the benefits of the tyrant over the principles of human rights, and those were mistakes.

She answers a completely different question. It doesn't even make sense. It's not possible to tell if she knows what Hamas is or not. But what is possible to tell is that she is ridiculous.

It's pretty obvious, actually. Our government has declared Hamas a terrorist organization, and yet she goes into some generic speech about protecting democracies everywhere after Couric asks about the democratically elected Hamas.

Then she tries to sidestep into something she does have a talking-point for: Ahmadinejad. Except he's a democratically elected leader as well. And she still doesn't answer the question, but does paint him as a terrorist because the party line mandates it (I'm sure she would have given Hamas the same treatment had she known who they were).

I was impressed that she pronounced Ahmadinejad correctly. But she answered the wrong question.

The youtube 'commentator' was annoying.

She never even mentions Hamas. She answers a completely different question. You cannot tell if she actually knew who they were because she answered the question as if she was a retarded goldfish. I don't think that she meant that Hamas was one of the groups that "seeks democracy." Couric plainly asked the question with Hamas in a negative tone, too.

The Iranian preisdent may be an elected leader, but it was not a fair election. That isn't valid.

I was actually a bit offended by Couric's question, which has such arrogance to imply that it's perfectly reasonable to oppose democrcy if *we* don't like who *they* elect.

Sort of misses the whole principle of democracy and shows no value for it or others' rights to even ask that.

But Palin is such a train wreck, you barely notice.

See you Palin basher is just going too far. I mean if you just say Palin's answer is BS and didn't even addressed the question, you'd been perfectly legit in the attack. But you have to go on saying she doesn't know Hamas, or where Gaza is based on nothing but guess. She at obviously know where Hamas and Gaza strip is or else he wouldn't mention Iran and their desire to attack Israel, which is one of the problem in that region, Hamas and other terrorist's group's desire to eliminate Israel.

I hope you're joking.

If Palin gets asked a question involving Israel, there is no such thing as a *default correct answer* that involves a talking-point about Iran.

She didn't address the question at all. She was clueless about Hamas and Gaza.

So Iran's desire to destroy Israel isn't representative of Hama's view? Like I said, your statement is purely based on your own opinion and your own interpretation. You don't know for fact if she knows what Hamas or where Gaza is. But I guess these days, BS opinion counts as fact anyway, especially on the Internet.

Man she is a NIGHTMARE. I cannot tell if she knows or not. I'm inclined to think no, since she clearly changes the question.

She probably has an idea what Hamas is, however I doubt she knows the particulars.

IMO, here's what's going on with Palin. There is an old adage in politics that says to answer the question you wish were asked. You start off quickly answering the question put to you, but before getting into specifics, change the subject to something semi related that you can spin positively. She just hasn't a clue how to go about it. She's trying to get back to the talking points of the campaign, but failing miserably.

Couric's facial expressions when Palin goes off on the wild tangents are priceless.

However Katy was too nice.

I would've said repeatedly, hey you're not answering the question I asked you.

She did on that "not to belabor", but really if she was keeping Palin on course the interview would have fallen apart quickly. Palin was a mess.

Katie actually hid embarassing Palin tapes

It's scary to think that the interviews we saw were the nicely edited ones to make Palin look good.

Its ever so hard to understand the entire history of the world when Palin is clearly starting out at debate camp kindergarten. Well folks, in VP debate night, we will see what she has learned between then and now.

As for the debate, its somewhat going to depend on the questions being asked. But when US Israeli policy, as done by more mature US politicians steeped in the history of the region, end ups with the same kindergarten results, except the mature politicians add total schizophrenic policy to the mix, the Palin answer may not be so comparatively bad.

Ever since the 1967 war, the net effect of US mid-east policy has been to fossilize in a state of perpetual terrorism with no end in sight.

Clean sheet of paper anyone?

heh, make fun all u want but not everyone speaking out against Palin bashing is from Alaska. You know what, I don't even want McCain/Palin to win cause of the fvcked up last 8 years. But the more u people bash Palin with BS, the more pissed off conservatives/some women is gonna be and you will drive more ppl to vote for that ticket. Plus the worst thing you can do is underestimate Palin, and have the entire media telling everyone how stupid Palin is, set a low bar for her and she manage meet or exceed that expectation making all democrats look stupid. Remember she had debated democrats and republicans and won the Alaska governorship.

I would rather err on the cautious side and believe she is not that stupid and have the democrats fight this election out without being over confident.

Well, the Bush Administration did its hiring based on strict adherence to certain party principles to the total exclusion of actual qualifications (Cabinet posts, Justice Dept., Iraq, FEMA, etc.).

McCain seems to be of the same inclination. Maybe he just wasn't paying attention to the results Bush had from such a policy.

That was her "mid-east" talking point. The thing is, most americans know even less about the region, who Hamas is, whether they are "bad guys or good guys", or just a tasty concoction made from mashed chickpeas. That answer looked bad to us, but joe sixpack probably went "right on!"

No, she's not stupid like the media may portray but the truth is somewhere in between. Even that is a horrible place to be for the GOP.
