uhm, you know Israel weren't the ones to start shit in Lebanon, First it was PLO and then it was Hezbollah. They just wen't into a country that was already in a state of civil war in order to establish a security zone (attacks from Southern Lebanon caused a lot of civilian casualties in Israel).

Just like many in here think that the Israelis love Americans and would never threaten to harm them. I was on the bridge of a US Destroyer and heard the Israeli gun boat Captain tell my Captain that he would shoot the ship if we didn't get out of the way. Their fire control radar was locked on and the gun was pointed at our bridge. We happened to be escorting the ship that was evacuating the PLO from Beirut. It's a good thing they're were other US ships that were far enough a away and could fire upon this gun boat as it was too close for the ship I was on guns to fire at it.

And the irony is that US money/weapons was use to threaten a US destroyer.

I'd say the Jews looked at the Warsaw Ghetto and said "Never again will we allow ourselves to be placed in the position of having an overlord who is free to kill us off at his whim. If we must die, let us form our own state and die keeping it free and safe."

As far as which side is doing what, it's worth pointing out that were we all born into this area we'd be ninety-nine percent in line with the side of our birth. It's very difficult to rationally evaluate right and wrong when the other side forms a mortal threat that routinely drops rockets or tank shells or other artillery on you.

What makes you think Israel will stop building settlements if the Palestinians stop fighting? That's never been the case in the past. They just stop using bombs and start using bulldozers instead.

I don't think it's ever happened before in Gaza. In the West Bank things were going pretty well until the recent riots in support of Hamas though, so it's reasonable to assume that if the Gaza Palestinians behaved as have the West Bank Palestinians, they would reap similar benefits. Certainly the Israelis are better behaved in the West Bank.

Perhaps more importantly, if we don't accept this then the only remaining course is to leave or to "kill all the Jews". Given that Israel is proving much more adept at not being killed than the Palestinians are at killing them - not to mention killing a LOT more Palestinians than the Palestinians kill Jews - the latter certainly does not seem to be a winning course. That suggests either leaving or accepting that Israel has a right to exist as the only rational choices, but YMMV.
