Although Sharon's tactics dont seem to bring results, there are bombers being stopped everyday, and attacks being averted due to roadblocks and patrols. Truth is, I dont think any other person could've done a better job in this position. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place, and nobody looks good in his situation. That would go for ANYONE in that situation.
It is true that attacks are being stopped every day, but ultimately these are just small victories in an ongoing war. Is Israel to live for the rest of it's existiance with say 5% of sucide bombers slipping through..how about 10%... or can we live with maybe 1%?? How many people have to be buried in order for victory to be obtained?? To say Sharon is making the best of his position is somewhat interesting as in my view and that of many in Israel, the territories, and around the world.. it is Sharon and Arafat who are responsible 100% for creating and continuing the situation we have now. He didn't just innocently walk into a maelestrom not of his own making. He did it, and now he has no way to fix it nor does he seem to demonstrate any incilination to do anything but escalate, escalate, and then escalate some more.
I agree that Sharon isnt making the situation any better, but NOBODY can. His citizens are getting killed and he has to protect them however he can. Like I said, I dont know if ANYONE can do a good job being Israeli Prime Minister right now.
