I have this HSF and my xp 2000+ just crisped. I wonder if im the first one to do this?

I have a Abit KR7a-Raid Motherboard. ( Not sure if the mobo or HSF did the trick) I was not overclocking. I folled the Powerpoint directions for the pal over at HArdOCp. Im not sure what happened. I heard that the spacers that come with the pal8045 shouldnt be used with the ABit KR7a Raid. Any comments and help would be appreciated at this point. This was my first AMD Build. Done plenty of P3, P4 setups. What a way to venture over to AMD!!

***sad day***

Is it possible to reuse this HSF or is it a paperweight??

I looks pretty clean /....a few sratches from razor blade ....getting off the singed greenish/yellow

Uh-oh...that was the same set up I wanted to get. Well..not the same fan/heatsink, but MB and CPU same. I better watch out myself. Maybe I should get the professionals to install it for me.

Well, I had a KR7A and XP1600+ with the PAL8045. I just followed the directions that came with the HSF. I used the flat washers and everything was fine and dandy. Well, except for the DOA board.

Did you use the flat washers or those shouldered ones? I used the shouldered ones and killed my chip. Crispy Fried CPU, yum yum!

i think it was the shouldered ones. I guess i chose poorly.

The shouldered ones didnt fit in the mobo holes...but i had no idea it would keep the hsf from touching the core!!!

like a hamburger in tinfoil in a microwave. Crispy and blackened i think

Do you even use these with the kr7a-raid. I thought i recall someone saying no

As it turns out, those shouldered ones create just enough room to cause the chip to die! Man I feel your pain! Cost me my 1.4 T-bird. Also damaged my board. I have an Epox 8k7a and there is a little component on the back that got tore off by the screw turning. Man it's a great heatsink but can cause you nightmares if not done right.

Next time use the flat ones and you will have no worries!

I'm using the 8045 with a KR7A-R and an 1800+ with no problems @ 140 FSB. I used the flat washers and tightened the HS until I was just starting the bow the board a little. Your HS shouldn't be shot, just lap it if it's no longer flat and smooth. I guess I was lucky, because I didn't recieve the shoulder washers and would have used those, but not without checking the AS2 "footprint" on the HS. This looks a little strange having the standoffs not touching the board though. Bummer for you.

For anyone who does not have detailed instructions on how to install the Alpha PAL8045 Get this .pdf file If you are not 100% sure that the shoulder washers will fit into the holes on your motherboard, use the flat ones. TRUST ME... I have a dead 1.4 T-Bird right in front of me. I look at it every day, kind of a punishment i am putting myself through! :|

for myself i used 6/32 screws to act as studs through the motherboard. useing rubber washers on both sides of the motherboard to prevent shorting out then all i had to do was put heatsink on and tighten till it felt right.........checking the springs to make sure it was even. this was all done outside the computer case and tested prior to putting it in the case to make sure it was right tightness.

Yup Mo Funk's right about the washer thing (As I can sadly attest to) if you use the washers with the "shoulders" the 8045 wont make proper contact with the core, Remember the screws bottom out and the springs apply the pressure. I lost a XP1600 just by using the wrong washers.

The flat washers are the hot setup!

Sorry about your cpu perhaps you can rma it .

well guys bad thing was i bought HS without fan online...only gave with 8 flat washers and 4 shouldered ones. I still would have followed the directions. But i guess i will need 4 washers of that size from the hardware store. Somone mentioned rubber washers. you need 8 for the springs 2 per screw. I was shorted 4 unfortunately.

thanks for the support.

Rma is possible ...just being patient here.

I used the same kind of wahser I use under the motherboard standoffs If you have some of those in the bag of goodies that came with your case, you can use those and save a tript o the hardware store.

The shoulder washers don't fit the small(er) holes in many mainboards. If they don't, don't bother with them. Even the flat washer will prevent the HS from touching the core sufficiently.

I fried my 1900+ with the KR7A-Raid... didn't bother to see what happened... just went to get a replacement processor. I got the 1800+ instead and its working like a charm.

So what stuff do we need exactly for the Abit KR7A (I'm getting the non-raid). Anyone get the Alpha8045 from 2cool tek? The fan-less setup is heading my way, would i need to go out to the hardware store and get some extra washers?

exactly, as in #washers, which parts to use, which not to use.

Would have never guessed so many ppl fried their cpu this way. sorry dudes

What i did was go my hardware store and got these items for my alpha 8045

1)........Four 2 1/2 inch 6 /32 screws...........now these are harder to find and will need to be cut. so i am thinking 2 inch will work also

2).......4 rubber washers........ i used these to sandwich the motherboard so it wouldnt short out

3).......8..... 6/32 nuts...........

4)......reused same springs..........

5) ....also used the shoulder nylon washers since the hole on the motherboard is bigger than the 6/32 screws i used. i found the epox had smaller holes.........

I just used what was in the kit. Well minus the shoulder washers the second time! ;)

Pabster-"Even the flat washer will prevent the HS from touching the core sufficiently" Are you sure? I am using the flat washers right now and my chip is running at 42c full load (lcd monitor, mobo says 35c). So it appears to be doing it's job.

Wait, actually I am not using the flat washers, I am using the same washers I use for the motherboard standoff's. Those little rust colored ones. Hmmm.
