A Pakistani cleric offered a 1.5 million rupee (£19,400) reward and a car for anyone who kills the cartoonist who drew Prophet Mohammed.

Another Islamist leader was put under house detention, amid fears of more deadly demonstrations today, officials said.

The cleric did not name the cartoonist, and several cartoonists submitted images to the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which first published them.

Thousands of security forces were deployed across Pakistan to prevent unrest.

Police arrested 125 protesters for violating a ban on rallies in eastern Pakistan and arrested 30 others after firing tear gas to disperse a protest in the southern city of Karachi.

So ~$30kUS, and (I'm guessing) a 20 year old Yugo, to put the whack on someone??

Sadly, I know people, non-muslim people, that would probably do it for that amount!

Cleric offers reward for killing cartoonist

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A Pakistani Muslim cleric said Friday that he and supporters were offering rewards of more than $1 million for killing Danish cartoonists who drew caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

The story by msn has it at $1 million, pretty big difference in the figures, ah yes a "jewelers association" is putting up the rest. Anyhow, not surprising.

There are wackos everywhere. Need I remind you of a certain Christian preacher who has advocated killing a number of world leaders? Hint: his initials are P.R.

further proof that this area of the world needs to be addressed swiftly. it's not about pushing ideals onto people, it's about instilling moral decency and preventing the powder keg from growing.

Yeah, we are doing a great job on instilling moral decency at Abu Ghraib and Gitmo and by the rendition of suspects to nations that boil them alive.
In fact many nations think we need some moral decency instilled seeing as how we execute children and let people die from lack of health care.
And we are doing a great job keeping the power keg from growing....by pouring gasoline on it.

I like Chavez but Robertson never put a bounty on his head genious.

He's declared himself to oppose our freedom of speech rights in our own countries and in so doing has declared himself to be a terrorist. We should take him out. Why do we put up with this sort of thing?

Here is the distinction. Robertson never placed a bounty on Chavez's head, nor did he promise eternal life and x number of virgins awaiting the assasin in heaven. Another distinction is that our society ridiculed and largely ignored Robinson, resulted in his having to offer a formal and public apology.

I don't see Islamic society ridiculing these nutjobs...if anything, they have embraced violence as a suitable response to that which they don't agree with.

The difference obviously is when PR speaks we all laugh, when this guy speaks a bunch of idiots start carrying out his wishes.

Yes yes we get it, because of Abu Ghraib the US is never again allowed to try and push moral decency again.

Did he offer a reward? How many Christians booked flights to Venezuela to carry out his will?

Not a valid analogy. Christians are for the most part a de-clawed bunch; they're just talking smack, they're not actually beheading people. Devout Catholics (including even priests sometimes) ignore the Pope when he goes off on masturbation, birth control, and extra-marital sex. Its not the same thing.

If you just have to make ridiculous comparisons, then modern-day Islam = Christianity c.1000 AD.

Do you consider killing 30,000 Iraqis as some sort of Moral Superiority?

I'm in for $500 for anyone who kills the cleric... who's with me?

You can prove that American soldiers directly and intentionally killed 30,000 Iraqis? A majority of the casualties in Iraq have been due to these insurgent knuckleheads targeting their own people. Many of the car bombings and insurgent attacks have not even involved American forces.

Did we line them and shoot them?

Personally, I think somebody should start up a web site to gather contributions. But say "in case nobody kills him, then we'll contribute the proceeds to X charity". I'd contribute just out of spite.
