Pakistan warns against US-India nuclear deal

article

SINGAPORE: Pakistan has said a civilian nuclear energy deal between its arch rival India and the United States would wreck international agreements to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, the Financial Times reported.

...

Washington has refused to extend the same co-operation to Pakistan, with Bush saying the two countries have "different needs and different histories."

...

But analysts say that the growing US-India strategic ties could encourage Pakistan to seek a similar relationship with traditional ally China.

...

Kasuri said the United States should not be treating the two countries differently.

"We demand equality of treatment and we will continue to pursue it. We have a large population and a fast-growing economy. If the Indian deal goes through, there are some things we will do," he said, without elaborating.

Looks like our deal with India might cost us an ally who may turn to China instead

Nothing new here.....in fact things are breaking down according historical guidelines....
we are just taking advantage of the fact india has a huge population and hedging our bets becuase it would appear that China who has been a sleeping or shall we say timid giant in the last 100yrs has suddenly decided the time has come to jump into the international arena in many ways including militarily!!

yet, it truly is impossibly to treat every country in the world the exact same way..
The Nuclear card has already been played...both Pakistan and India have those weapons.....

So we shall just wait and see

I would hate to think that all the diatribe about the USA being the most powerful nation in the world was just that...

Just think in terms of geography we are cut off from the rest of the world....
China really has been a sleeping giant.......
We should be making friends instead of flexing our muscles...

I agree, I think both contries should be treated equally... We should not show any favoritism.

BUT i know nothing about global politics so I dunno wtf is really going on.

Anyone want to clear things up for me ?

Theres this thing called the internet. You should use it.

Anyways JEDIYoda, just what exactly are you talking about? China has nothing in common with America. Its in fact the exact opposite of us.

Individualism vs Communalism.

We need to invade Pakistan and get rid of the military dictator and install a democracy. Get OSL while we are there...

You hear the exact same thing from both sides. When we cuddle up to India Pakistan issues "warnings". When Pakistan is our sweetheart, India issues "warnings".

Just another Muslim nation that needs attention. It's far from over. As I said before, it may take 20 years, but even if they aren't assimilated they WILL be reckoned with.

Funny, because if Pakistan were a democracy, I would wager it would be very anti-Western and very pro-OSL. Be glad its not a democracy and is headed by a secular leader.

Whoever said that the current US administration was intelligent? The NPT signatories have more of a right on civilian nuclear programmes. Blunders add up just like Afghanistan, Iraq and possibly Iran.

Not to worry. Why do you think the US worked to get Wolfowitz's Citibank buddy installed as the PM in Pakistan?

If you think Pakistan has a secular leader your head is truly in the clouds.

Its amazing what some people post here.

Are you kidding me? We should treat both countries equally? No. Pakistan should be treated like the craphole that it is.

LOL 😀 So true. Why on earth should India and Pakistan be treated equally? They have absolutely nothing in common. They are "different countries with different needs and different histories". Just think about it, the US poured billions of dollars into Pakistan after 9/11 and supplied them with so many arms. Does that mean they should do the same with India? India did protest when Bush agreed to deliver the F-16s to Pakistan, but at no point in time did it threaten the US like Pakistan is doing now. Pakistan is just ungrateful after all that the U.S has done for it in the last 60 years. The Nixon Administration went so far as to threaten India militarily with the 7th Fleet in the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.

For the uninitiated, a short quiz:

Match the country with the description. Choices are Pakistan or India.

1. Government:
Military Dictatorship that operates under a Fundamentalist Islamic constitution:
Secular Democracy where power has never been gained or lost by force:

2. Foreign Policy:
One of 3 countries that recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan:
Strong backer of the Northern Alliance (whose leader Ahmad Shah Massoud was assasinated 2 days before 9/11 by the Taliban:

3. Civilization:
Has territories that literally Osama Bin Laden's and Mullah Omar's fiefdom:
Has territories that are developing along the model of Silicon Valley:

4. Military ambitions:
Initiated 4 unprovoked wars with neighbour:
Defeated neighbour 4 times when attacked without provocation:

5. Nuclear Weapons:
Stole nuclear technology, bought nuclear weapons and ran a nuclear bazaar for proliferation:
Developed nuclear weapons as deterrent against large communist dictatorship:

6. Terrorism:
Hotbed for terrorist activities and breeding ground for entire generations of terrorists:
Victim of above mentioned terrorists for over 50 years:

The list goes on, but if you are smart enough you will see a pattern here 😉

The head of the IAEA already said that the deal would prevent the spread of nuclear proliferation.

Pakistan is already a strong ally of China. The US alliance with Pakistan should only be temporary because of their geographic location.
