Pair of speakers for MAX $500

This is for my dad. He's had a set of speakers around since I was born (ONKYO D-77). They're shot, so now he's looking for a good pair of speakers.

As the title said, he wants to spend a max of $500 and won't go any further than that, so he has no problems if its bookshelf speakers if their sound is better than a $500 pair of floorstanding speakers.

I was looking at the Yamaha NS-555 (http://store.audioholics.com/p...-tower-speaker--each-) but I'm wondering what everyone else would suggest.

There was the A6 - 6T6 (Text) and the M22 Bookshelf speakers (Text)

M22's are nice but it sounds like he's not using a sub. I would go with something with a little more oompf to them(That's a technical terms lol). From what it looks like the D-77s were the old school design for speakers with a three-way large woofer design. It might be tough to satisfy his need for bass with a bookshelf. So here are some towers that may satisfy him. It's difficult to recommend anything without knowing his personal preferences though:

AV123's X-SLS

Inifinity Primus
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1...l?search=primus&tp=185

Elemental Designs
http://www.edesignaudio.com/pr...ff9f18a8d03ee933ff72bb

I know AV123 has a nice in home trial policy if he might be picky about what he gets. The other ones might be a bit more difficult to return. Not sure of eD's policy about in home trials.

I'll look into them. He has a sub, I remember seeing it; it's about a year old. The speakers are the ones that need to be replaced, though.

Sucks about those refunding shipping charges.

[edit] Thanks for all of your helpby the way. Being a speaker noobie (I rarely touch them and go more toward headphones right now) I don't know much about this.

Uh, PurdueRy correct me if I'm wrong but when I looked most of the speakers you had listed the price was for a single speaker, not a pair. So on average most of the speakers you listed would be about a grand per pair. The exceptions would be the Infinity Primus and Elemental Designs.

My mistake on the Polks but the AV123 is also per pair

Doesn't quite hit $500, but take a listen to the Paradigm Atoms. I don't really listen to too many "low-end" speakers these days, but I still love Paradigm and the reviews are all still great.

Infinity P362 from Fry's for $125 each better than the P252 from Crutchfield (which also has only one left IIRC)

Nice.

Here's a TAS review for the Alpha:

http://www.psbspeakers.com/reviews/TAS-B1-Review

I haven't heard this revision, so I base my remarks on my own experiences with a previous version and other much higher-end speakers among others, and the fact that when TAS and Stereophile both go ga-ga over the same model, it's probably not an accident, and likely a good choice.

OP, don't let the price mislead you -- it's either a good speaker or it's not, and just because something else is a couple of hundred dollars more does not mean that it's going to give you as much enjoyment.

Cheers.
