Pair arrested for telling lawyer jokes...

HEMPSTEAD, New York (AP) -- Did you hear the one about the two guys arrested for telling lawyer jokes?

It happened this week to the founders of a group called Americans for Legal Reform, who were waiting in line to get into a Long Island courthouse.

"How do you tell when a lawyer is lying?" Harvey Kash reportedly asked Carl Lanzisera.

"His lips are moving," they said in unison.

While some waiting to get into the courthouse giggled, a lawyer farther up the line Monday was not laughing.

He told them to pipe down, and when they did not, the lawyer reported the pair to court personnel, who charged them with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

"They just can't take it," Kash said of lawyers in general. "This violates our First Amendment rights."

Dan Bagnuola, a spokesman for the Nassau County courts, said the men were "being abusive and they were causing a disturbance."

He said he did not have the name of the lawyer who complained.

Americans for Legal Reform monitors the courts and uses confrontational tactics to push for greater access for the public.

The pair said that for years they have stood outside courthouses on Long Island and mocked lawyers.

On Monday, however, Kash said he was due in court to answer a drunken driving charge from a year and a half ago. The men are due back in court on the disorderly conduct charge next month.

If only we had lawyers who studied the law to help someone other then themselves. How sad it truley is.

There are plenty of lawyers that do public interest work. And do you think these guys should have the right to sit in court and obstruct deliberations? (edit: nm)

I thought they were in front of the courthouse, not in court?? They should be able to tell jokes out there, don't you think? The lawyer who complained doesn't have enough guts to come forward with his name?? What a crock. Methinks some people take themselves WAY too seriously, especially most lawyers. I agree there are good lawyers, LIKE MINE!!! LMAO!! 😉

Oh you're right. I thought it was in court. That's sad.

Lawyers can be sanctimonious jerks just like everyone else, BUT they should have more respect for the First Amendment than everyone else.

I don't think these guys did anything wrong.

Case dismissed!

How is a lawyer different than a trampoline?

You wouldn't jump up and down on a trampoline with your boots on.

These people were apparently arrested for absolutely nothing. Of course if they had said the same joke about Bush....... LOL

My g/f actually is a lawyer that does public interest work in the same courts that this incident happened. AFAIK, she's not the one who reported these guys tho'. 🙂

I'm surprised this made national news though.

There's gotta be something more to the story here... seems pretty absurd that you can't tell lawyer jokes outside of a court. Inside the court, I can understand. But waiting in line?

Lawyer Jokes via Fark.com

Some good ones in there 😀

A man walks into a law office and asks an attorney, "How much do you charge to answer three questions?

The attorney replies, "Five-hundred dollars."

"Holy crap!" the man sputters, "That's pretty steep, isn't it?"

"No." replied the attorney, "What's your third question?"

One fine day, three businessmen (a Russian, Cuban, and American), and a Lawyer were riding on a train. They were all pretty bored, but after a while the Russian decided to break the ice.

Russian: "how would you all like some fine Russian Vokda?"

The others nodded heartfully. The Russian pulled a full flask of expensive Russian vodka out of his coat pocket and poured shots for everyone. After this was done, he tossed the remainder of the still 1/2 full vodka flask out the window.

The others all raised their voices in alarm at such waste, but the Russian waved to them to be calm.

Russian: "It is no matter.....Vodka is plentiful in my country."

...the others all shrugged and knocked the vodka shots back. After a while, the Cuban pulled out a full box of fine Cuban cigars. He passed one out to each of his companions and took one for himself. Everyone was thankful, but they all shouted with alarm when he threw the rest of the box out of the window.

Cuban: "It is no matter....Cigars are so plentiful in my country...they are worth nothing to me."

...the others all shrugged and went about toking up the fine Cuban cigars.

They were all enjoying themselves greatly, but the American businessman seemed to be preoccupied with something. Finally, the American stood up...grabbed the lawyer, and threw him out the window.

None in the group protested.

What's the difference between a dead lawyer in the road and a dead skunk in the road? There's skid marks before the dead skunk.

Hard to find an argument for supression of free speech there: political speech in a public area. There may be some missing facts that would justify "time place & manner" restrictions.

Exactly my thoughts. This line from the story:

The pair said that for years they have stood outside courthouses on Long Island and mocked lawyers.

clearly suggests there's more here than is being reported.

i think they exchanged words and probably yelled a bit more than the story suggests...and even if they did "mock lawyers" for years (which seems like a dumb thing to mention in an article complaining that you were doing nothing wrong) i think they were well within their rights. assholes, yes. but probably still legal assholes.

At this point, I'm making no comment on the legality of their arrests; my only point is that there's got to be more to the story than 'pair arrested for telling lawyer jokes'.
