White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. — Bubba Watson says he's painting over the Confederate flag on his car made popular in "The Dukes of Hazzard" television series.

The two-time Masters champ said Friday he'll replace it with the U.S. flag on the roof of the "General Lee 01."

Confederate symbols have been the focus of debate since nine people were killed June 17 at an African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. Authorities say the accused gunman had posed in photographs with the Confederate battle flag.

Watson said after his round at The Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia his decision "was the right gesture for me to do." He also said the American flag sends a statement everyone is "created equal."

Watson paid $121,000 for the car, a 1969 Dodge Charger, at a January 2012 auction

LOL WTF. insane. just fucking insane. agree or disagree with the flag the General lee is a part of television history. painting over it is a mistake. if he does not want the car i'm sure someone would.

but hey paint over it. lol people trying to hard to be PC

Too bad getting rid of an icon is a bit more difficult than simply whitewashing it. Too bad, no, I'm meant good thing.

The General Lee will always be remembered, more so now than ever. Thanks PC police!

I wonder if that tv car company that takes a bunch of tv cars like the Ghostbusters ambulance, Herbie, jurassic park jeep and the general lee, will exclude the general lee for future events.

I guess it is fucking insane to get rid of a symbol of racism, bigotry and sedition because it may mess up ur idea of TV history. I guess you got ur priorities in the right order.

When people get to retroactively decide what things are a symbol of just to get rid of them then getting rid of them for those reasons is pretty stupid. Case in point neither the General Lee, nor the flag painted on top had anything to do with those things you mentioned. Have you even watched the show?

What if racism never existed because all evidence of it is erased. :whiste:

Honestly though, I have no idea what the end goal of all this really is supposed to be.

Me neither. i think trying to whitewash history is the wrong thing. slavery is nasty and terrible. but trying to tie everything to it that has to do with the south is just as bad.

Trying to be PC as possible is not going to any good either. Painting the car (yes it is his car) is silly. it's a part of TV history for good or bad. it should be kept.

Should we not show hogans hero's because of the nazi's?

Then the network should have kept it and not sold it.

Kind of a shame. I think the Confederate flag belongs in a museum (a museum of racism), but I also really loved those Duke boys (and girl). Ah well.

It's a classic well known vehicle now. it is part of TV history like it or not.

There was nearly a dozen of those cars IIRC. Some were used just for the jumps and got rebuilt weekly.

The guy is a complete idiot for paying so much money for that car just to turn it into a garden variety old dodge. I guess wasting money is the politically correct thing to do. It just makes all those General Lee knockoffs all the more authentic.

Why not? Removing Confederate flags and symbols off state-sanctioned/owned property is a no-brainer, but voluntarily removing it from your own property is just as legitimate. Watson seems to believe the overwhelmingly negative history of the flag deserves to be removed. If this gesture is meant to send the message of equality, as he seems to imply, calling it an act of "PC" is cute and all, but ultimately empty (and weak) rhetoric. It's not PC to recognize the ugly, ugly history of the Confederate flag. It's just fact.

EDIT: Oh, you said it does belong. Indeed.

If I urinate over the Confederate Flag and put the video on Youtube.. how would people react?

Would there be outrage or it's just a personal right under freedom?

It would probably get a similar reaction to pissing on a rainbow flag and putting the video on YouTube.

Same outrage, different audience.

Easy way around the bolded: digitally replace the Confederate battle flag with the American flag on the TV show.

It's his car.

Does seem a bit silly to do it, but I guess he's making a statement of his own there.

ISIS has been destroying all cultural and historic artifacts that they deem to be offensive. Everyone loves them and is better off for their actions.

Right?
