Painting faceplates?

Ok...i'm getting a little disgusted over the premium charged on some items if one wishes them to have black faceplates (like me).
Is there any articles out there that can explain how to do it easily or has anyone here done it?
It can't be that difficult, can it?
 
Go over to PCA and do a search for the word 'dye'. Some kind of new dye (instead of paint) that seems pretty nice. Cheap too!
