I have 4 computer cases, monitors, keyboards, and mouses that I want to paint. I haven't completely decided on colors, but have narrowed it down to either yellow w/ black trim or a deep shade of blue w/ black trim or w/ grey/metallic trim with a satin or glossy finish. Leaning towards satin just for the ease of getting a satisfying finish.
I am somewhat of a newbie, but I've got a lot of time and will do this right. Everything is going to be sanded, primed, painted, sanded and given a few clearcoats. Which brings up another question...Just how much of a lesson in futility is getting the front vented area of the antex sx1030/830 cases painted correctly? Would a dip in some sort of dye be a better idea for that?
When I first decided to do this I thought of all the Testors model paints from when I was a kid. Would their cheap airbrush kits be worth anything? I've got a big 2.5HP 100psi compressor that I use for some tools. Would it be possible to use that with a smaller airbrush? Recommendations? I'd like to keep the entire project under about $75 including paint. Are there any companies out there similar to Testors?
Is there any advantage when using a paint like Testors over say, Krylon? (Other than colors...Thats the main reason I am interested in Testors)
Also, other than one being oil based, and the other water based, what is the difference between an enamel and an acrylic paint? Will the enamel be much more durable? What about laquers? Can you even use acrylic in airbrush's? Would a brushed on enamel be durable enough without a clearcoat for all the little buttons etc? None get used very much, except for the mouse, clearcoating that wouldn't be very difficult i dont think though. I am also thinking about painting my keyboard keys, is there anything that would be durable enough for use there? This would only happen if i decided not to use black as a trim color, or I couldn't find a black keyboard with my preferred key layout.
Know of any online shops that will sell me the Testors paint at a good price? (Nearest City that might have something is 50 miles away) Lastly, know of any scale model hobbyist web boards with folks that might have more experience with this stuff?
Thanks!
jt
