painting a monitor??

Not exactle a "case" issue, but painting is always discussed here so I figured it would fit 🙂

I'm making a basic computer for my fiancee, and I want to make it look nice on top of being functional. Would I be correct in guessing that using one of the bezel/plastic painting tutorials would apply for painting a monitor (and keyboard/mouse) as well? I'll have to be careful with the glass as well as the buttons and air vents on the monitor, but it doesn't seem TOO hard (famous last words).

Does anyone have any experience painting a monitor, or am I just asking for trouble?

Thanks! 😀

i am thinking about it too. I guess the first thing is get the whole "case" of monitor out from the tube and all the electronic things inside. I think they may have high voltage inside right?

Yeah, I'd guess it's just as dangerous as opening a PSU (which is relatively easy). Don't touch anything 😉

it is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS to open a monitor or tv or psu if you don't know what you are doing

consult somebody that would have some kind of experience with it first

Could you see problem if I painted my monitor as is. Without trying to take off the case. I don't want to open up my monitor.

As long as you masked off everything important (as mentioned above, make sure to mask off all air vents) then I think you'd probably be fine. Don't hold me to that though 🙂

I've been thinking about doing a good paint job on my monitor too. I just did a basic (read: horrible) job using some silver acrylic paint and a sponge brush. After reading the many painting mods on this forum, I think I could do a real paint job. I've been sizing up my monitor (KDS AV195-TF 19"), and it looks like I can remove the face around the screen without hurting too much inside. I just want to paint the face. Anyone take the face off their monitor? Will that kill me/destroy my monitor?

I'd say if you are confident opening electronics and careful, go for it. I painted the front bezel and stand on my NEC 19" monitor by disassembling the case and removing the tube and all the buttons. In my experience, masking never works as well as you hope. Lines always remain. Plus with all the buttons on the face of a montor, there is the risk of paint filling the gaps or 'gluing' buttons into place. I wouldn't worry too much about the vent holes, however, if you are considering painting the whole thing.

Opening the case and disassebling everything is fairly straightforward, but you need to be careful not to touch the capacitors inside. I don't know how long it takes, but if you leave the monitor unplugged for a day or two like I did, I ASSUME the capacitors will be discharged by then. Even so, from what I could see, you'd have to work pretty hard to zap yourself. What is more likely is breaking something. The PCB board under the tube is rather large and heavy, and once taken out of the case there is little supporting it. I kept the tube face down on a towel and braced the board to keep it more or less vertical. You'll also need some metal hooks to help remove and replace the tube in the front bezel. I fashioned some from metal coat hangers and got the tube out by hooking onto the corner brackets. It's also much easier with two people. That way all 4 corners can be hooked.

I know some people use spray cans, but I used a cheap Badger airbrush connected to a compressor to paint my computer, monitor, printer and scanner and I'm very happy with the results. I even made new name tags for the monitor from some clear CD labels.
