Another fun tactic that occasionally works - crawl slowly right through the center of an open area... 95% of the time, the person gets shot right away... but that one time that someone actually succeeds, they become a legend. Sometimes, people key in on bunkers and other hiding spots so much that they overlook the open areas.

Move around... people that claim the be "snipers" with their 18 inch barrells are often the first to go. Also, if you run out of paint on the field. Shoot alot of air really quick... alot of times people will stay ducked allowing time to grab the flag or whathaveyou.

Thanks atybimf. I should mention that my trip is part of a package deal. The facility is providing all the gear, but most of us are going with our own stuff. I'd probably use the facility's gun, especially as it's my first time out. After hearing horror stories about last years rental goggle mess I'm chosing to bring my own, as well as a neck protector.

Good idea. I'll tell you the worst places to get hit are the neck, the back of the head (I got shot here by a teammate who freaked out when I was making a move up the field), the knuckles and fingers, and the jewels (yeah, where a cup).

if you don't have a cup, use a towel.

It's also going to be in the middle of August so it's going to be crazy hot. Any recommended loadouts that a newb should bring along to be prepared?

Get ESS ballistic goggles. Don't ****** with eye protection. Paying $100 or so, for ensuring that you'll keep both eyes, is not too much of a price to pay.

skip the invisions. they are uncomfortable and chaging the lenses sucks. check out the vforce line of goggles, highly recommended. i've been playing for many years, played tournements and also work on and off for a paintball store and field. the cost should be about the same.

also skip the anti-fog spray, just get anti-fog lenses.

I've been playing for several years and have had an Invision for a while and I think its really comfortable.

eh. you must have a small head. our psp d2 team actually dropped dye as a sponsor because they hated those goggles so much.

One of the guys is calling the place tomorrow to see what they're actually including for the price. All we know is we get a ref. for the day. and "equipment", whatever that means. Probably faded jump suits and generic guns.

i wouldn't count on jump suits unless they specifically say so. we have a lot of people coming to our field expecting us to rent clothes and we don't, nor do any of the other fields in the area.

you don't need ess ballistic goggles to play paintball. many manufacturers make full face masks that are more than capable of stopping a paintball. the only way people get eye injuries is from taking their goggles off. my boss has been running her fields for 13+ years and has not had a single eye injury. she is also very strict about safety and has no problem kicking someone out for not following the rules.

He has a decent double-trigger electric gun (~$150, not like a thousand-dollar Angel),

i always laugh a bit when i see someone mention the Angel these days. a long time ago (well not that long, but in paintball years a long time ago) the angel was one of the first electronic paintball markers and was expensive and everyone was in awe of it. these days hardly anyone shoots them, and very few pros do, but we still hear someone go "woah i think that's an angel" (and 99% of the time it isn't) or some kid will come into the store and ask why we don't sell angels.

1 - Never ever taking your goggles off while playing a game, ever.

2 - Spend money on playing the geme. Spend money on field fees, paint and air. Don't spend hundreds of dollars on a jerseys, brand name gear bags... etc...

Outlaw > Woodsball > Speedball/Indoor.

I like JT masks...the best thing is to go to a paintball shop and try the masks on. A good shop will have tester masks try on. Not every mask fits the same and not every one like the same style. One other piece of equipment to buy is gloves...It sucks to get a hand shot at close range. I wear a pair of fingerless gloves that have a plastic backing to take the hit.

I also wear a baseball cap backwards to give extra protection to the back of the neck.
I started that since I was playing outlaw new player sneaked up on me nailed me there.

Ok. I picked up a pair of Dye i3 goggles, a neck guard, and a 3 pack tube set. This weekend I'll hit an Army/Navy and get some pants, etc.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

By far the most important thing - when your goggles are fogged, you are useless. You serve no purpose other than a distraction to the other team, and a easy target.

Get thermal goggles.

And watch the balls....

BTW, you're not going with stony brook by any chance, are you?

No, we're going to Skirmish in North Eastern PA. It's not the big 3000 player event, it's just a private party.

Ah. Well, I highly suggest getting the new digital woodland style marine BDUs. Keep still in the right place, and you're damn hard to see. Whatever you wear, keep it dark, green, brown or black. Anything but those colors, and you can be seen from a mile away.

You'll get used to the sting, it ain't too bad, as long as the person shooting you isn't an asshole.

Ive played at skrimish before, it was pretty fun. The refs were cool, and the place was nice. They had some pretty decent fields too. They make you use their field paint, which kinda sucks, but its not too bad.

but my advice? don't do it. paintball sucks your money like no other....it's not like computers where you simply need to stay up to speed w/ the latest technology. in paintball you have to stay updated with the latest gear AND it costs a crapload of money each time you want to play. you'll spend at least $80 every time.

As said, store to check out mask.. size is a big issue for internet order.. I have the JT proteus, which I like very much.. and I also have the little fan to suck out air, only 10 bucks on ebay...

I been playing since '88, I rented the first few years till I was 20 and bought an actualy piece of hardware...

I usually play full day, so a case of "field" paint is 90 around my areas.. while you can buy a case for 30 outside.

try to have fun and dont be an ass like some people flashing their stuff all around...

there are a lot of bugs out there.. even if you wear long sleve... this gives you some protection... i love wooded areas but not bugs

Ok, wow. What a blast. 12 of us met at about 9:30 am. The weather was in the high 80's which turned out to be a bit too hot later in the day, but we played on the shaded fields and took our time. It was amazing fun, we had a great ref. and a great group of guys playing.

I purchased an Invision i3 mask, neckguard, and a paint tube holster. As well as a new pair of digital BDUs from my local Army Navy store. I also took an old rucksack with a couple of water bottles and some energy bars, as well as bug spray and some old t-shirt converted towels.

I read a tip on the PBnation boards that suggested tucking a towel into your belt to protect your boys. That tip sounded much more reasonable to me that running around all day pinching my buddies in a cup. With an old t-shirt doubled up + underwear + BDU's I think it offered the best balance between mobility and protection.

As with most activities in my life I got hit in the head more than anywhere else. My very first paintball hit me square in side of the neck. The neck guard paid for itself on that hit, I highly recommend one! I got hit two other times in the head but those look much worse than they actually feel. I had two other hits on my body. Considering how some of the guys looked at the end of the day I was lucky. Of the entire group we had two hits that opened skin and one tennis ball sized lump on the arse.

We played 6 v. 6 and it was pretty evenly balanced. Our team lost the first few maps to some nasty flanking by the opposing team. We paired up after that and moved together and constantly updated each other on the enemy location. The other team didn't work together after the initial plan phase and that ended up being their weak spot.

If I had anything to change I'd work less on my cardio and more on my quad and upper leg stretches. We're all walking funny due to all the sprint and crouching. I'd also carry more water probably.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions they were very helpful.

Thanks for the update.

If you thought that was fun you must try Airsoft. When played right and trained for it can be much more realistic, nothing like clearing a room Delta style in an urban map, or hitting someone from far away with a custom strong spring loaded airsoft sniper rifle.
