Painkiller: Overdose problem

I run XP Pro SP1 for old game compatibility, such as Blood. Some of them still don't work as well in Dosbox. Now, for some reason Painkiller: Overdose requires SP2. I downloaded the demo and it won't boot for that reason.

Is there something profound missing, or can I trick it into believing I have SP2 without actually getting it?

couldnt u upgrade to sp2, but run the older programs in maybe compat mode...or run them in a virtual machine of SP1.
