painfully slow thumbdrive?

i've had a 256mb iomega mini thumbdrive for a couple months now that replaced a generic 64mb one. they are both usb2 and connect into usb2 ports, but this iomega drive is very slow. copying things off the drive is fairly fast, but copying even 13mb (though granted a lot of them are small files from a portable firefox build) can take about 5 minutes.

is it slower possibly because of the larger memory size? is there any way to increase speed?

I don't think speed increase is a happening thing. Speed is a factor of the flash itself, the controller, and the bridge hardware. Since there are pretty much no honest metrics, and not even any well hyped marketing metrics, USB flash drives are something of a dodgey proposition performance wise. Some are quite speedy, others suck. There are reviews about; but you pretty much take your chances. Unfortunate, really.
