Paging Dr. House... (ATOT Armchair doctors)

Okay, so tell me what the fuck is up with this...

Fine all day yesterday up until about 4pm. Then my side gets sore. Right side, abdomen, just below the bottom-most rib. At first I'm thinking kidney or appendix, but it was just a dull ache for the most part, particularly if I stretched the side or pushed on it a bit.

It gradually got worse over the course of the evening, also including some discomfort down below my stomach. I was functional though, didn't have any problems taking the dogs for a walk and such. Finally, around bed time I got the chills, and they got progressively worse for about an hour (I was fully clothed, under a nice thick comforter, shivering uncontrollably and feeling somewhat nauseous). After about 45 minutes of that, I assume I spiked a fever because the chills stopped and I was toasty-roasty (basically I could feel that I was getting a fever of some sort). Not long after that I managed to doze off.

A couple hours later I woke basically soaked in sweat, though I was feeling a bit better/less uncomfortable. Removed a few layers of clothes, and went back to sleep. Woke up this morning feeling reasonably okay, though my side is still a little sore, but not nearly achy as it was yesterday.

Basically, to sum up: Sudden onset of a "dull ache" in my right side, accompanied by slight nausea and distention in my mid-gut. Later, sudden onset of severe chills/shivering, shortly followed by an apparent spike in fever. After sleeping it off, dull but very bearable ache in side remains and I feel "generally" fine today. All total, about ~6 hours of "illness".

wtf?

I was gonna say Lupus, damn!

Seriously though. What did you eat earlier in the day? Almost sounds like a mild case of food poisoning. If your pissing out of your ass later you'll know whats up.

Nope, wasn't planning on sharing... "butt" since you asked... I was mildly concerned about a massive case of gas. Reasoning? I made a huge batch of vegetarian chili two nights ago which we had for dinner. I had two bowls, nothing out of the ordinary, except to compensate for the lack of meat I used 4 different varieties of beans (all totaled probably 3 or 4 pounds worth), so it was a very hearty chili. I'm not generally used to that much fiber in one sitting, so I was thinking that the cleaning crew might have been working it's way through the halls, given I shit about a half dozen times yesterday (again, not terribly out of the ordinary, as I probably have some form of Crohn's/IBS anyway). But I definitely wasn't pissing out of my ass this time around, which was somewhat surprising.

Did the abd pain come and go in waves? Because I had the exact same thing ~15 years ago after eating a bunch of raw broccoli with dip. I was doubled over in pain and it lasted that night and some of the next day, with aforementioned gas release. Happened again the next time I ate broccoli and I knew what the culprit was, so I avoided it for many years. It's fine now, in fact I ate a plate of it last night for dinner. (mixed veggies)

Sounds like the same thing. Did you actually take your temperature or were you just sweating and hot followed with chills?

FYI abdominal problems are one of the hardest things to diagnose without blood tests and imaging. If it's better today just watch the sx, but it sounds benign from what you described.

/disclaimer: I don't know shit, don't take my advice.

Foreman, go away.
13, strip down and do a little dance.
Chase, die.
Taub, go away.

You should get your answer ~5 minutes before the episode ends. Oh and you may die.

Not really, pretty much constant during the course of the evening. Didn't ache quite as bad when I found a decent position to lay/sit in, but it was there. I figure it may have been due to a massive intake of fiber in the chili, given I'm generally eating more meat and things as opposed to... beans.

The chills came first, fairly rapidly. Then they subsided and I got hot. Didn't take my temperature, since I had no idea where the thermometer is (lots of stuff is still packed from moving), but I felt hot. I figured it might have been from the ~45 minutes of shivering I had just done and my body was releasing the build up, given I was completely lucid and not drowsy at all - which when I spike a fever I'm usually out of it completely.

After we administer random drugs to your system based on hunches which cause sever adverse reactions that almost kill you

Actually, using House as a basis for our national healthcare policy, I have a feeling healthcare costs would end up going WAY down (mostly because people will be too afraid to go to the hospital until they're almost dead anyway).

I had the same type of pain several months ago and the doc said it was a result of constipation. Even though I thought I was regular, he said I blockage in the intestines and recommended over the counter Miralax or Ducelax. It seems to work. Should note that I never got a fever or the sweats like you.

Hmm you either do or you dont and you should really get that checked out. People with ulcerative colitis are at much higher risk of colon cancer. Not to mention there are medications to help ease your symptoms. You right upper quandrant pain is totally nonspecific if its a one time deal. IF it keeps happening in that area, after meals, it can be gallbladder related, like biliary colic. If you have IBS... well... sorry. That shit sucks since theres not much conventional medicine can do for you.

Indeed. I'm getting toward the age where doctors are going to want to fist my asshole... I tend to avoid doctors in general.

Pretty sure I have some sort of IBS related thing, and have since I was a kid. Part of the reasons I live with it is because of what you said... not much conventional med can do about it. So I just live around it.

In other words, you're going to die tomorrow so write up your will and say your farewells today

Farewell.

Feeling much better today. Little if any discomfort in my side. Figuring it was a nasty case of gas from the chili that needed to work its way through. Either that or I'm dead tomorrow.

Good deal.

So when's next chili night?
