Brake pads are cheaper to replace than transmissions.
An automatic with paddle shift will have the appropriate software and electronic controls to modulate a downshift without adding any meaningful stress on the transmission. Downshifting to engine brake with such a transmission would be perfectly fine.
The problem was on older automatics without the appropriate electronic controls where dropping the lever down a gear would result in the transmission "slamming" into the lower gear and substantially stressing the brake bands and/or clutch packs.
