Anyone ever ship tires the way online vendors do?

They basically just use cardboard and some thin foam on the face of the rim to protect it.
The tire (tread and part of the sidewall) is entirely exposed.

Will UPS or Fedex let me ship it this way?
 
When I ordered tires, they came stacked in pairs with packing tape holding them together. The tires were totally exposed. I ordered from Tirerack and they shipped via UPS, so I'd guess if they let Tirerack ship that way, you could also.
