Here are just a few thoughts of mine.

First of all, I attend college and play many online games, and have hosted servers before. As long as their is no rule against this, there is nothing wrong with it. Students pay a lot of money to go to college, and the bandwidth of the university is one of the things they help pay for. They are entitled to do what they want with it as long as they are not violating and set rules they agreed to.

That being said, the admin at most schools, including mine, will help students with such things as ports that are blocked and setting that need to be changed to play certain games. Travis happens to be a position where he can change things himself and according to him (we have no reason not to believe him), he has permission to do say and asked for help.

Anyway, don't be so harsh on someone for something they are probably allowed to do.

Show me exactly where in trav's original post that it is "obvious" he had/has permission to do what he asked.

No one here has any problem helping w/ legitimate and legal requests, neither of which seemed to apply in his original post.
Even so, the first responses "cautioning" trav about the potential consequences of circumventing were quite gentle.

You do make a very important point:
the admin at most schools, including mine, will help students with such things as ports that are blocked and setting that need to be changed to play certain games.
And that is EXACTLY how people should go about trying to get restrictions lifted: going to the people with responsibility for the network, NOT trying to circumvent or crack past.

BTW: I think it is HIGHLY insulting to suggest that folks in this forum who refuse to assist others with circumvention or other prohibited behavior are not being helpful, or are in some way not adhering to the "spirit" of this board. Because if the "spirit" of this board IS to assist in illegal activity, I won't spend another moment in Networking.

I see what you mean completely about asking the proper people to change ports, etc. I suppose I saw him as someone who was allowed to do this, and you saw him as someone who should have asked someone to do it. I guess it's just how we percieved his position.

I don't think that support should be provided for the types of people who do things they aren't allowed to do and you have every right to question him, it just seemed to get a little out of hand this time.

regardless of all this chatter - bottom line is Travis has the authority and the right to ask a question here about his packetshaper and game server. he spoke of how he tweaked the p.s. etc., you really think some kid in the dorm has access to this ? think again. so let the man ask his question and expect a reasonable response without catching all this grief and thread crapping

Having access to equipment (even as an intern) doesn't automatically equal clearance (which was mentioned before).

Just so the issue (which is closed as far as I'm concerned) isn't clouded.

I point to the new networking forum rule and ask that this topic be closed.

travisio, ask your supervisor if he will spend 15 minutes with you, after his work hours and assist you with learning what you need to know to solve your problem. if not I'm sure the software / hardware has a manual / help pages that may be of assistance.
