I was looking into VoIP companies and came across this deal at broadband reports:

J&R is now selling Packet8 VoIP Adapter for $69.88
Usually you get 2 months free + free Activation
Until June 19th, you get an additional 3 months free.
Service is $20/month there after.

Just be aware that you must commit to a full year or pay a $60 cancellation fee.

Here's the Link

"Unlimited calling to anyone in the 50 US states and Canada and Packet8 subscribers world wide for only " Does this mean you can only call people with Pockert8 subscribers for free?

Hmm.. I'd take that to mean that you can call anyone in the United States, Canada -AND- any other person who happens to be a Packet8 customer, no matter where he/she is in the world (provided that they're using their Packet8 VoIP adapter)! None of the calls are technically free since they charge $19.99 per month. However, you don't pay anything extra to call the folks who are Packet8 customers or happen to live in the US or Canada (and are on regular phone lines).

Heh. I may have just made things more confusing, but at least I tried! :)

I think that it means you can all overseas Packet8 users are no additional charge.
Calls to normal overseas numbers are 2 - 3 cents per minute.

LINK to packet8 website.

The VOIP FORUM at broadband reports is a good resource.

I'm using packet8 and am satisfied with the service. I've not tried any of the other VOIP providers.

My 2¢ .

I'm trying VoIP over Comcast Broadband with BroadVoice .
At least, so far, for my teenager's phone line.

Not perfect, yet.
But has been a 200% winner for me, for two weeks worth.

$10 / month (actually, $11.45) for unlimited in-state phone line.
Lovely features.
Voice mail optionally also sent to a designated email address.
Everybody loves to use BV's 7 digit dialing (for same area code calls).
Just need "#" to signal dialing done.

I also use OneSuite for out-of-state long distance.
OneSuite's 2.5¢ / minute even beats BroadVoice's 3.9¢ / minute rate!
(But requires calling OneSuite's local access number, rather than just dialing 1)

And I'm in Massachusetts.
So is my BroadVoice VoIP phone number.

Thus, with BV's unlimited in-state, I can call "access" numbers anywhere in the state, at no additional cost.

As a result, I'm also using RNK Tel's 1¢ International calling card for overseas calls. They only have 2 access numbers, both in Mass., both of which would ordinarily be an in-state toll call for me with either Comcast Digital Phone or Verizon.

Hey, I gotta' check if I can call domestic USA via my "International" 1¢ deal ???

First month's BV statement:
Balance Forward $0.00

New Charge Details
Unlimited In-State (06/07/2004 - 07/06/2004) $9.95
Regulatory Recover Fee (06/07/2004 - 07/06/2004) $1.50
Activation Fee $39.95
Device Fee $49.95
Device Discount ($49.95)
Shipping & Handling $14.95
Federal Excise Tax (3%) $0.34
Total $66.69

just make sure to either keep a land line or a cell phone handy in case you need to call 911

I've been using Packet8 for the past year and a half. Love it! I plugged into the phone box on the outside of the house, bought a set of phones that run off of a base station, and dropped Bell South. Unlimted calling anywhere in the US and Canada for $20.55/month.
Drawback...no 911 service, must dial 11 numbers even if you are calling your neighbor. I would only recommend if you have a very reliable HIGH speed connection.
