Packet Writing software

I'm sure many folk use it. you should be aware of the fact that you have to format the cdrw before you can packet write which decreases the cds capacity to around 550Mb vs the unformatted capicity of 650Mb. personally, I back up some of my stuff on cdrw but burn it as a normal cdr. I can reuse the disk by simply erasing & reburning it should I need to update the stuff on it!

I've heard their are problems between Direct CD and Nero though. Don't knopw if it is true but isn't their some kind of conflict between them?

Direct CD I got with my writer prevents 2000 from hibernating. I use FileCD from NTI CDmaker pro, but I don't like it as much. but CDRW is very handy for backing up emails, saved games, pics, etc...

i have a cdrw burner for more than two years now and im using cdrws extensively, but i burn them as regular cdrs with nero and eraee them if needed. i was just asking wheter anyopne uses paket burning, since its advertised as better than normal writing (no need for lead-in,/out...) and if ot turnes out to be worth it, whats the best software.
anyone?

Someone please explain why you lose space ?

I don't even know what packet writing is.. thought it had to do with writing the size of a packet you send, as in ICMPing.

Please explain ?

It basically means that you can use a CD as one large floppy disc. After the CD has been formatted you can just drag and drop files onto the CD as you do with a floppy disk. Hope that helps! 🙂

you loose space beause it has to be UDF formatted, and like floppyes they loose space in formating. unformatted floppie is 2MB, and formated is 1.38MB (1.69MB is possib;e, but not standart)

ahhh...so it recognizes the CD as a removable/writable disk drive like a floppy in windows?...

that's kinda cool...but not worth losing 100mb...

i use cd-rw mostly as well, because i'm always copying temp files to bring around places...i just quick erase it in nero when need be and then copy over my old files which don't show up from quick erase...

works fine.

i heard that packet writing is necessary for getting 16x speeds on yamaha drives...otherwise they're actually slower than 16x...only on the yamaha drives however, non?

so, does your cdrw show up as a rom drive still? or does what's the deal?

You lose space because CDs don't have a File Allocation Table like the boot areas
that are built into floppy and hard disks. In order to use a CD or CDRW like a
floppy the Packet software has to create an area where it can save changes in
case you delete / rename / move or copy over exisiting files. But at the same
time it still has to "remember" where that old data you no longer want to access
is being held. To do that, DirectCD (and I assume inCD does this too) creates
a large work area for it to store those changes in.
