Packet 8 free activation and only $19.99 for most plans.

OK so not as good a deal as sun rocket but they were not in my area. Packet 8 wasnt in my city BUT they allowed me to pick the next city next to me that was which was very cool. Sun rocket wouldnt let me do this because there wasnt anything even close to me they said. Could be a hot deal for others like me that live out in the sticks and couldnt get it as well.

Got the box today hooked it up acording to the instructions, stuck in my activation code and in less then 5 minutes I am making phone calls. They are even better sounding then my land line from bell south so I am very happy.

Just thought I would throw this out there. Vonage was going to do the same for me since I wasnt in thier area but after calling them and asking questions thier customer service didnt impress me and I was going to have to pay for activation and the box.

So just though I would give my 2 cents on the cost, the ease of set up, and happy I am.

Click here to check them out. They even have video phone for the same $19.99 a month as well.

If anyone wants I would be happy to call you if you wish to check out the quality of the service and I wouldnt mind testing it more myself as well 🙂

Just so you know their Customer Service is one of the worst I have ever had with a phone company (worse than MCI which was my previous worst).. Very rude customer service reps and no easy path to escalation.

You don't need to contact them often though. I have had them for a year and I had to call them once or twice since they slammed me with some outrageous international call charges for calls that could never have been completed - a guest dialed a 7 digit local number without 1+area code first - so they counted that as a international call (for as long as the puzzled guest must have held on wondering why the call was not connecting) when clearly there was never a connected call. I never got them to remove those charges.

Also, these guys have started added the standard federal charges, and recovery fees etc. that regular phone companies add. So your REAL monthly charge is $22.90 - which is not that far away from Vonage $24.99..

On the plus side, their international rates are some of the best (SunRocket rates are very close - about 1c per minute higher than Packet8 for most countries)..

I am planning to move to SunRocket once my contract expires in a month or so..

Wow different then what I got. I thought Vonage sucked butt because when I called they were very pushy, talked really fast, and wouldnt let me hang up when I told them I wanted to shop around. When I called packet 8 they were very noce to me and answered all my questions and when I told them I wanted to shop around didnt give me and sales speech or talk the other companies down like vonage did.

After that and seeing they had the free activation and a good monthly price I went with them. I have no contract so once sun rocket makes it near me I can go with them and get all the free goodies 😉

I have had Packet8 for 2 months now and I can say the serivce is great. I have had no need to contact customer service as I have had no need.

I've had Packet8 since 11/04. Big savings. I need to reboot the device once or twice a month. Call waiting triggers lots of static (anyone else have that? any solutions?). Customer service via email exists but is nothing special. The web site is simpe enough. You can go on the site from wherever you happen to be and enter a number to forward your phone calls. Since I live in NJ I save the difference between P8 and Vonage plus I save the state tax. P8 is in CA. Vonage is in NJ. Bottom line: I recommend P8 as a hot deal.

i tried vonage perhaps over a year ago and people were having trouble hearing me clearly and sometimes the connections would die in the middle of conversation requiring me to call back..

how good is packet 8 and sun rocket.. have these VOIP services improved much?

All I can say is I have called some of my friends on it they couldnt tell and when I told them what I had and how much I pay they are all changing to it. From what I understand is the speed of your broadband matters. If your on dial up you may as well not bother. I have 1.5 digital cable (its modest not speedy) and I swear it sounds better then my land line phone through Southern Bell. Over all I am very happy with packet 8. I cannot speek for sunrocket because I havent had them yet but as soon as the service is here I may change over. If the plan price doesnt change and I dont looses service that much I may not bother though.

I've had packet 8 for over a year now and as long has you have a good braodband connection it works just fine Although if I'm downloading I have to pause the download for the person I talking to to heard me clearly.

I use packet 8...very reliable and good customer service although for my US number I haven't had to call them. Forign number, I have and they are good.

Simply, they are 5 less a month than vonage and use less bandwidth.

I think you coulded have gotten a better deal with Sunrocket. All you needed to do is check which area code was closer to you and used that area as your base.
Just my 2 cents. I like their service, had it for 7 months now and they are cheaper than the competition.

It is available here!
I am thinking about it. I have high-speed cable internet. I have a wireless router. Please answer if you can.

1- If I get this and discontinue my local phone service, will I be able to reach 911 if the cable service is down?

2- Will I be able to reach 911 if there is no power? I don't see a point to this if I still need a local phone service provider for emergency! What am I missing?!

3- Do they offer caller ID?

4- I see two residential phone plans, "Freedom Unlimited" and "Freedom International". Which one should I get?

5- How long did it take them to deliver the equipment?

6- Does the PC have to be on for the phone to work?

7- How long do you estimate the free installation offer to be available?

8- Are there hidden charges?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'd have to agree.

corinthos--check out the SunRocket thread in this forum. It's HUGE, but there's a ton of good information in there. If you have any specific questions feel free to drop in with them, there are easily half a dozen folks in there who can answer just about anything you want to know.

Briefly, I've had SunRocket for a few months now and love it. Crystal clear, saves me tons, and never had better experiences with customer service than I have with SR. The best part for me is the long distance (lots of international calling), which not only has cheap rates but you get the first $3 every month of it for free.

Sorry for the double reply, I just saw this after posting and it deserves its own response.

1. No. You should have a cell phone as backup, frankly. Another option is that I believe any phone connected to any live phone line (even if service is shut off) can dial 911. Don't take my word for that though, double check it with your phone company. Either way I'd recommend a cell phone backup. This is the case for any VOIP provider.

2. See above. Most folks these days have cell phones anyway; I know I do. My cell phone is what I would use in case of an emergency.

3. SunRocket offers Caller ID.

5. If I recall correctly, I had a box waiting for me when I came home from work two days after ordering.

6. No.

7-8. SunRocket doesn't charge for anything other than it's service. "Installation" took me less than 5 minutes from box to making a call. There are also no hidden fees with SunRocket, at all. I don't know about the other VOIP providers.

Anyway, wanted to offer what I could based on my experience with VOIP. Good luck!

1. YES depending on where you live at. There is a selection when you go to sign up stating where E911 service is at. I left my land line on and striped it of everything and costs me $15 per month because where I live there is no E911 service for my city through either sunrocket or packet 8

2. Your best bet is to get a cell phone OR keep the land line on strip it down and use a corded phone and not a cordless. With the cell phone you just need one with no service and you can still call 911 on it. I say non cordless phone because a corded phone draws its power from the phone line not a outlet in your house.

3. I have caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and voice mail.

4. I have no idea that is up to you. I dont know anyone across the seas to call so I didnt need international. I do have the option though to call with the plan I got though.

5. About 4 days

6. No but the router and broadband connection needs to be on so if you have no power you have no phone.

7. I dont know said limited time and they are still running it so I thought I would share it and my experances I had

8. You will need to pay taxes like anything else.

As far as doing the Sunrocket with a different Zip and area code I tried that before going with Packet 8. I did the online and even called and was told I couldnt do it no matter what. They would rather wait. Im no dummy here though of course I would of taken them over packet 8 if given the chance to get all the free stuff and pay the year up front for a lower cost but I couldnt get it. Kinda happy in a way though. No I didnt get free phones and stuff but it was a total of $15 out of pocket up front for shipping and something else and Ive called atleast 20 people so far and been clear as a bell and no one could tell. I was worried about the set up after reading some of the sun rocket comments but it was a snap. I pluged in the phone, connected the adapter to my router, picked up the phone and it prompted me for my acount number and that was it I was making calls. OH and no problems either like droped calls or backwards talking like I would get on my cell phone.

Sorry to hear they've not gotten to your area yet. You should sign up on the website for their alerts--they have a system you can sign up for that will send you information when they do expand into your area. That way you'll know the moment they get to your area. Good luck with it all either way.

If their service is down, will your calls be forwarded to an answering service or will the caller be told that the number is out of service?
