Quote from a previous post:

"The Pacific Digital 8x DVD±RW uses rebadged LiteOn (LDW-851S & LDW-811S), NEC (ND-2500A) (Writes both 8x +/-) and BTC drives.
(Serial numbers starting with a "41 and a letter" are reported to be NEC ND-2500A drives)
(Serial numbers starting with a "P" are are reported to be BTC DRW1008IM) drives)
all other numbers are LiteOn drives.
The NEC & LiteOn drives can be upgradeable to DL burning. "

EDIT: Use this link for 12% off coupon (VALID IN-STORE ONLY 12/18/2004 - 12/26/2004) to get price to $33 (before tax). LINK

Decent deal if you find a NEC drive. Since the NEC 3500 is ~$65 at newegg, I'm going to hold off on the 8x model for ~$40. Still, great drive for $40 out the door, no rebates.

Zero here at the Staples in Greenville SC, woodruff Rd. Bought The Micro Advantage on sale at Office max but will be taking it back since it is a rebadged Aopen which had terrible reviews.

Thanks guys. It worked great. They had 2 left in san diego Rancho sd store and I got them with the coupon. The 41x SN was a NEC. The other is a 43 series SN I'm assuming its a liteon. If I don't decide on who to gift it to I'll return or sell it here.
Thanks. I'm on my way to make my PVR

They had 6 of them in the White Marsh, MD store. Problem was to get an associate to look it up on the computer and find out that they were all in the back in the warehouse. Not one on the shelves. So you had to ask for the product umber and they went in the back and got one for me. It is actually a Lite-On 811S.

Where do I find the hack to make it dual layer?

It came to $33.00 using the 12% coupon provided here, thanks so much. I also had to pay tax as well.

There's no hack to make the 811s burn DL media. You're better off returning the drive and looking for the NEC ND-2500A. With Herrie's firmware, that's probably the best out of this bunch.

I will go back tomorrow and see if they have any that start with the 41. Crossing my fingers.

cdfreaks forums have links too all the hacked firmwares. just remember to read the stickies (and not act like noobs) and you should be able to find them all.

Just a note, the one that I picked up had a SN starting with 42J****..... it was also a NEC 2500. Apparently, any SN with letters is a NEC drive. However, YMMV.

Yes, I forgot to mention they had to fish my drives out of the stockroom also. The manager didn't know anything about this deal.
which makes me wonder.... Hod did this deal ever get found to get posted here?

Wow, hit the motherload down here in FL.... 7 of em between 2 different stores....

Im debating picking one up and cancelling my order for the NEC-3500a, but for only $25 more i get 16x & D/L..... Hmmmmm

nomadh,

I stumbled upon this deal at my local Staples on Friday - I usually check every week for clearance items.

The shoppers at my local Staples don't seem to be tech heads, so usually I can get in on the good tech deals ...

I took the one back and got one with 2 numbers and a Letter at the beginning of the serial number and it was a NEC 2500A. Found firmware to upgrade it to a 2510 so now it is dual layer burner. They had these back in the stock room and had to ask a sales associate to go find one for me. There were none out on the shelves anywhere and not even a place on the shelves with the number. They have 4 left that I am sure are NEC 2500As in White Marsh, MD. Good luck. I am exstatic to get one for $33 plus 1.50 tax.

I got pwned with a lite-on drive.
It's quite loud.
Lucky I got it for $30 (manager's special) + 12% off coupon = $28 out the door.

Bought last one from Issaquah, WA

811s consistently pulls 6x+ on ripping 😉

Anyone know if any company is currently using an OEM Pioneer 108 as their DL burner???

I know PacDigital used to use Pioneers...does anyone else?

the thing is like a jet engine when it tries to read disc.
My friend's nec3500a is dead silent.

Is there anyway to limit the speed of the liteon drive so it doesn't becomes cranky loud?
