actually there is a good possibility it is a Liteon in it...I had bought a PD 16x10x40 one(black Liteon 16102B inside) and am using the USB2.0 componentry to have a portable 100GB harddrive...

Most certainly, kid. I bought two 32x Pacific Digial USB 2.0 drives from Staples several months ago ($48 each with no coupons or rebates or anything). The drives were manufacturered by Cyberdrive (and are actually pretty good). I took the Cyberdrives out and currently have a Lite-On 52x burner in one enclosure and a Panasonic A04 DVD-RW drive in the other.

One thing to note is that, on my enclosures at least, there was a "void if removed" sticker over a screw that I had to take out to disassemble the enclosures.

I think USB1 tops out at like 4x burning.

You'd prolly need to get a PCMCIA Card but even then I think it tops at 24x

Please correct me if I am wrong but I think that's about right.

Those IBM CDs are OOS, so I got some Engineers Computation Pads in there instead. They're REALLY handy, I can't get enough of them

The thing is that it's cardbus. I remember hearing that cardbus is limited to 24x (Or maybe I was hearing 32x) either way there is minimal difference.

Burn speed works on a curve so the higher the burn speed the less actual difference in time.

too true. You won't see your max burn speed until you reach the end of the disc. Thats why a 48x burner WILL NOT burn a disc 3 times faster then a 16x. It only reaches that 48x at the very end of the burn. The difference from burning at 32x over 24x may be a matter of 30-60 seconds (not exact figures).
