I just got my Telocity gateway recently because I had to switch from Flashcom/Northpoint to Telocity due to some financial problems at Flashcom (I'm sure quite a few have heard about it). I'm wondering why the heck the new Telocity modem is so darn big.. it's like four times the size of my previous 3COM SDSL modem. Also, they mention I can send back my 3com modem if I want them to refund the S&H charges for sending me the Telocity hardware. Should I bother keeping my old DSL modem? It seems like wherever you get DSL from, they will usually send you a modem anyway.. one that definitely works with their systems. Is it worth keeping around for the future?

Pacbell seems to think that with a "Gurantee MINIMUM of 384Kbps" its ok to CAP the line at 384Kbps.

I dont know how they came up with that, but that is what they did to my line. It took me MANY months calling them for them to put the cap back at 768 (where it was when they first installed it)

I removed the MTU tweaks, and put them back on default (1492) for the PPPoE, and I'm not running ICS. I will eventually however, install linux, which I had a very good experience with in the past as far as NAT goes (far faster and better than any Windows box trying to share a connection, though I may have just been lucky with the drivers).

For now I am connected directly to my DSL adaptor, so my network is very simple at this point.

However, what kind of extra setup are you refer ring to?

Okay, what you need to do is basically remove all the tweaks... don't set the MTU and leave it as default on 1500 which is what it is when it's unset. TCP Receive Window size should be on 32767 and use RASPPPoE. If you use any other PPPoE program, you have to set it to 1492 for the MTU otherwise you will notice you can't get to some sites because it chops off the other 8 bytes... It's pretty simple... As for Linux, it's called ip masquerading in Linux... FreeBSD calls it NAT and that's what I use...

Everyone has a cap... the upload is always capped at 128k unless you pay for the 6Mbps/384k service... the circuits are capped at either 384k, 768k or 1.544Mbps... Mines is at 1.544Mbps since install was free last year. It seems like they did all these caps after the self-install thing went into action. You should request to go with 1.544Mbps cap unless you have problems.. Call ASI at 1-888-900-9933 to have the cap changed to 1.544Mbps. The theoritical limit for PacBell 1.544Mbps/128k DSL is 193kbytes/13.8kbytes.

SuperKen! and Almighty1,

You were absolutely right. I call them, and I *was* at 384. Now, knowing that I did order 384 to 1.5M, this is bordering dangerously close to bait and switch. To put it simply, if Joe Consumer ordered DSL from PacBell/SBC/ASI, and didn't know about caps at all, they might not have even noticed this.:frown:

The business office is closed for now. I'm calling tommorow morning to get this straightened out.

heh, I wrote switch and bait!

Networkingrocks: How did you get such fast service so far from the CO.
I see no way that you can get that fast of bandwidth that far away.

Problem resolved! Not sure of their business practices, but at least it's now solved. I'm downloading at ~150Kbps right off the bat now.

Stable speeds too.

Thanks guys!

Pacbell is weird sometimes. In the beginning, they were super fast 140K+ (KBytes) and then, there were lame moments, where transfer were like 20-40K.
It is on and off.

The worst part with pacbell is probably email. Their email server
is always have problems...grrr.

Well, not much choices for cheap broadband here anywaz..
