What is the deal with these things? Everyone talks about how great they are, but how would they know? Apparently they are some kind of fictional beast, since nobody actually knows where you can purchase them!

I have never encountered these fans online. Currently investing in some low noise Sunons...hopefully I can trim off a few decibels from my snowblower here...

With my case I got a "Colorful" brand fan, and at 12v it is seriously in-audible.
I can put it to my ear and I barely hear the air being pushed by it.
It doesn't push craploads of CFM but its worth the 0db (NOT REALLY!) it makes.

What a coincidence. I just happened to come across a box of 60mm Papst fans at a local computer/electronics store this afternoon. They were untailed, 12V fans marked $3 each. I contemplated buying one to play with, but decided not to since I have no real use for it (nowhere to mount it in my case). They seemed very well made...

I've got three 80mm Pabst fans and a very quiet (although quite slow) Quantum LCT harddrive. The system is almost impossible to notice.
If I turn on some soft music or just open a window the computer cannot be heard anymore.
If you want a quiet system I strongly recommend Pabst fans.
I live in Germany. Pabst fans can be purchased here at almost any computer shop. I've bought my fans at Comtech.
You can order them online at AConto e.g. (although in my opinion AConto is quite expensive). AConto sells all kind of stuff to make a computer inaudible.

Ah, Papst. Lovely fans, silent and nice looking. They simply look like quality right out of the box. I have 3 (2 80mm and one on the CPU), and will not go back to Sunon for now.

As for availability: why can't we just say that Papst is Europes small way of revenging lower US prices and better general availability on computer parts? :D

Maybe I will go into business for myself, selling Papst fans in the US...
