Legislation to raise Pennsylvania's hourly minimum wage rate cleared the state Senate on Saturday, a day after the House overwhelmingly supported it. It now heads to Gov. Ed Rendell, who is expected to sign it.

The measure would increase the state's minimum wage from the current $5.15 per hour to $6.25 per hour on Jan. 1 and then to $7.15 per hour on July 1. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees will be allowed to pay a rate that rises more slowly under the legislation.

The bill will increase the pay of more than 254,000 state residents, the Governor's Office said. A provision added by the House on Friday will help lawmakers track the number of minimum wage workers employed in the state. The Senate approved the measure 38-12.

Pennsylvania will join 19 other states, including Delaware and New Jersey, in raising their minimum wage rate above the federal $5.15 per hour, the Governor's Office said. Pennsylvania's General Assembly last increased the minimum wage in 1988.

He hasn't signed yet, but its a done deal. It seems that NY, MA, AZ and CA are going to raise their minimum wages soon too.

40% of the US will then have minimum wages above the Federal level. Just doesn't make sense to not have the Federal minimum wage level increased and tied to inflation for permanent increases thereafter.

I haven't corrected for regional variations in cost of living but I figured out that a single income household would need a minimum of $10.50/hr for subsistence living. This is once you factor in cheap rent, utilities, basic transportation, and food. Now if the employer does not offer 100% funded health insurance for the entire family but you qualify for a group discount, you need to make about $15.85/hr. This is partly why we have such a high level of uninsured people in this country.

Maybe if we start paying people a decient wage, we won't have to waste so much of our tax dollars making up for it.

I doubt many people will see this increase. So few people live off minimum wage, mostly teenagers who waste their money on useless crap. Besides, businesses who refuse to pay the increase can always turn to illegals.

I've never heard a good reason for a one-size-fits-all national minimum wage. Different regions have different costs of living. I also don't think an adult minimum wage should be the same as a dependent minimum wage.

I think it makes much more sense to have each region set minimum wage laws (one for minors and one for adults).

The "either-or" fallacy.

Read 'nickeled and dimed'--a story about a woman who tried to make it--and failed--on a minimum wage job.

You don't live here so you have no business commenting.

There are a ton of businesses taking advantage of the low minimum wage and getting away with it for Industries that used to be considered well paid including the IT Industry.

Many State and Federal Govt positions included also taking advantage of the low wage.

Please.
Just ONE example.
Come on, you can do it.

If you chastise someone for having "no business" commenting on something because they don't live there, you probably shouldn't have just posted in the Mexico election thread :) Just like you, people have interests and will comment on what interests them and they will post about it. Their place of residence really has no merit in a discussion on this forum.

It seems that everytime there is an increase in minimum wage the economy does get a bit of a boost.

How is it that we have gone 10 years since a raise?

because less than 2% of the population make minimum wage and 1/2 of thsoe still live with their parents. Minimum wage adjustments are pointless as it is very easy to find a job making more than that.

Probably not, as they are probably already paying higher than minimum. However it still will put artificial pressure on them to increase their wages. Raise minimum wage and looks for more self service lines in stores.

Just refuse to use the self-service lines, and they will be forced to hire cashiers.

So tell me how many people make between 5.16 and 7.14 an hour?

Currently all those people make more than minimum wage, but would be making less than minimum wage if it was increased to 7.15.

That company has been hitting the pipe rather hard. I wish them luck in finding someone for 25k who has either a) worked in the industry long enough to know how to be a NA (probably 5+ years) b) someone with a CCNA (they usually get paid 60k min) c) someone with a college degree they probably paid 40k for.

Edit: Also you get what you pay for, no one worth a crap is going to take a Network Admin job that pays 25k a year. Heck most of the really good ones wouldn't do it for twice that.

lmao the only people that will apply for that are people who dont fit the job description. No qualified candidate would work for 25K.

Edit:btw your example shows a person making 12.50 an hour, not 5.15.

pwned yourself, as usual.

$12.10 an hour is bad but no where near $5.15 or even $7.15.
And the funniest thing is, you posted this yourself. No wonder you're complaining about the job market, using Windows calculator to divide a salary into an hourly wage is too much work for you :)

whew , thought my calculator was broken. Cuz I came up with just over 12.00 an hour also.
