What is the Marvell Sata controller? Is that a second Sata controller or something? If not how do you just shut it down (I assume one needs a Sata controller)

Marvell sata controller is one of the Sata 3 controllers. The board comes with 8 sata ports. 4 sata 2 and 4 sata 3. Two of them are controlled by the marvell controller. Since I only use 5, I disabled the marvell ones since they were causing the issue I described. I'm not saying you will get the same problem as it may be unique to my hardware setup or a conflict with some program I have.

It is as simple as selecting the marvell controller in the bios and selecting disable.

Ok thanks. I'm not sure I'll ever need more than 2 Sata3 ports (since any HDD will never need more than Sata2).

I guess I'll put the Asus family back on the short list with ASRock and get them out of the "penalty box" in my mind.
