P65 vs P35

Ive been reading for the last week or so and I cant find a good comparison. It seems the P35 chipset is the sweet spot now. I currently have an Abit A9 Pro. From what Ive read they are a bit flaky when OC-ing. Ive tinkered a little and it does get flaky after 10% OC, but I honestly dont know if it's voltage, or what. I know its not memory.

Anyway. Im looking at doing an upgrade. I already have a decent system , but prices on stuff now is so tempting, might as well. Im using the mobo above, C2D e6600, Patriot 4-15-15-15, Nvidia 8800GTS 640. Im looking at Q6600, same memory, Nvidia 8800GTS 512...but stuck on a mobo.

Back to the original question. Differences?

not an awful lot tbh.
& you should be able to get a lot more than a 10% overclock out of an AB9 Pro with an E6600 assuming that your other components are upto it.

if u game, keep the cpu and get another 8800gts640 and a sli mobo... you'll get more bang than going to a g92... and oc the cpu some more...

Fixed*

dont bother with any of the old G80 video cards. being phased out relatively fast as they are dead technology compared to what you can buy now. if you are looking to get a new video card dont.. just wait for the 9800GTXs' to release and you shall be much happier than if you would have went with another G80.

If your budget is tight get a IP35-E or even a Pro version since they have come down in price. Id either recommend that or some gigabyte board. All the other manufacturers IMO dont come up to par with the service/performance ratio that the Abit and gigabyte have.

just the good ole' .02

Back to the original question. Differences?

What are you using it mostly for? If gaming, what's your monitor size?

If you have a relatively small monitor (say 17" to 19") you should be pretty good now.

If you have a larger monitor (or will be getting a larger monitor), a more powerful VC would probably help more. I'd try Oc'ing what you have now, and see how far you get before getting a new mobo. Then make sure you have at least 2Gig RAM (didn't see that in your post) and maybe get a new VC, like the GTS 512Mb if you have framerate issues.

Unless of course you really want to polay with a Q6600, then pick a good P35 board and have some fun! 😀 Nothing wrong with that either.

Gaming and multimedia (ripping/burning) mostly. I have a 22 wide monitor now, and am using 4 gigs memory.

Honestly, I would think your current setup is fine, unless you have a game that gives you framerate issues. I've got a Q6600 (couldn't resist getting it 🙂 ) with a 8800GT and a 30" LCD, and don't have problems running CoD4, SupCom, GoW, Bioshock. I'm not about to try Crysis though.

Certainly, if you want a new toy to play with (and who doesn't?) go ahead and get the Q6600. There are pretty cheap, and give a good "bang for the buck" now. You can reuse your RAM, since you won't need high FSB speeds. Have you considered getting an e8400 and going for 4GHz? You would need higher speed RAM for that though. Dual cores are a bit easier to OC as well.

Most of the P35 boards will work well, and everyone has their personal favorites. DFI, Abit, Asus, MSI all make boards that will give you a good OC. I prefer DFI, but I see a lot of people with the IP-35 that like it as well.
