Just a warning about Newegg: I recently purchased parts to build 2 Conroe systems from them, and got an unbelievable number of defective parts, up and down, in my package (and not from UPS shipping, either).
Their QC seems to have gone way, way down, perhaps they've grown past the point they can manage quality on their inventory control, or perhaps they're going for "cheap" deals on known second-quality/restock parts from elsewhere; whatever the case, I'm going to be REAL hesitant about buying from them.
Oh and they managed to lose an item I RMA'd to them along with all of that. All in all, a terrible experience, I'm sorry to say, as I've completely trusted Newegg in the past. Do they have new management or something?
I had mixed experience with Newegg during the last 12 months as well; I also feel that their service and reliability changed to worse, but I keep shopping there since I don't have idea who else to buy from. I can't get anything locally because the area where I live (SoCal, Palm Springs area) has no stores, the nearest Fry's or CompUSA is like 70-90 miles. Anyway, I noticed that these days Newegg ships from varierty of places (when I started to buy from them years ago, all shipped from the nearby LA location and I used to have the stuff within 1-2 days), now the delivery often takes much more then quoted 3 delivery days.
Just to name a few problems which I recall: the $1400+ IBM laptop that I bought in February arrived later then quoted, and shipped from completely different vendor (Ingram Micro) - when I checked the warranty status on IBM website it indicated that the item's warranty started 2 months before I got the unit - weird and I don't understand it. I let it go without further questions sice the laptop was sealed & perfect... On another occasion I bought Samsung LCD monitor that arrived after some 7-8 days (3 days quoted) with several fingerprints over the screen and very poor backlighting - despite reporting the problem to customer service right away and being promised quick resolution, it took newegg 5-6 weeks to process the claim, and I had to call them several times until they finally issued the RMA and let me ship it back. Another recent thing is that I order several parts (that need to be delivered together) and while online system lets me place the order, then only some parts of the order will ship while the out-of-stock portion simply gets cancelled (it is however not possible to cancel the whole order anymore; all one can do is either refuse the package once it arrives so it will return to shipper, or accept the shipment and call & ask for RMA right away - both options are hassle) - basically the inventory status is not up to date. The problem is that if I knew that part A is not stocked, I'd certainly not order (or need) the part B... well, enough ranting and sorry going bit off-topic, got carried away - good portion of my Newegg orders still arrives just fine, about as fast as advertised, and in good shape....
Generally, I think that during the years Newegg's sales volume expanded much faster then the capability of their logistic systems and customer service. I think it is still good vendor (as I keep shopping there ), but I'm getting used to possible delays or issues, and I don't consider them to be so perfect anymore. Now I'm planning to spend there another $1400+ - I hope all is going to be smooth.
Dave
