The Asus manual says:

"RIMM4200 modules require use of 533MHz CPUs; therefore, do not use RIMM4200 modules with 400MHz CPUs."

Does it just say this so you don't buy a 400MHz bus CPU and then find out there is no offcial support for using it with your PC1066 mem 533MHz bus? You could always underclock the mem to run at PC800 speed with a CPU like the 1.6a, right?

I'm just wondering because if I bought a 1.6a and couldn't get it to overclock I'd still want it to run with the RIMM4200.
 
The 4200 Rim is a completely different socket for Ram, it has a much bigger notch on one side and PC1066 will not fit in the new socket.
They're saying it because rimm 4200 requires a 533mz bus to run the CPU also 533mz capable.
 
Right, I'm aware those sockets are physically differnet, but I think I convoluted terms. If I got the P4t533 with a stick of RIMM4200, that memory would still function at a 1.6a's stock speed on the 400MHz bus, right? I'm guessing the manual just said that so you wouldn't buy a cpu that doesn't support the ram's max rated speed?

I figure that I'll get a 1.6a, mabye overclock it, and then get about a 3GHz 533 bus (or whatever is out by then) processor to go in the board when they're $150 next year and my system's getting too slow for me. In any case it's better than my 400 MHz Celeron.
