P4T-E BIOS version - old or new?

After reading about the problems with the older P4T-E boards and the Northwood CPUs here I wondered if there's a way to tell what BIOS version the board comes with before buying it?

With most of the currently shipping boards, there is a sticker on the i850 firmware hub, that indicates what version the BIOS is (as is the case with most ASUS boards now).

It's a small square chip, with a white label on it with the board name, and the BIOS version. The sticker that you are looking for says "P4T-E 1005".

I just went to my local Fry's Electronics. I told the saleman that I had to see the board before buying it, so he opened the box. It was the P4T-E WOA with the 1005 BIOS, but also with the CYP DRCGs! :Q

In addition to the DRCG disappointment, IMHO Fry's price ($169) is too high, especially considering that the P4T-533 will be out in a month. :disgust:

What exactly are 'CYP DRCGs'?

Where do I look for it on the board and what's the name of the other (better) kind?

Will it matter if it's one or the other if I'm not overclocking? (If that's at all related...)

edit: I can't find the version of the P4T-E with out audio where I live.

Will I have any problems with the on-board sound when it's been disabled in the BIOS? (I will be using a SB Audigy).

'CYP' DRCGs = Cypress Dynamic Rambus Clock Generators. While 'ICS' clock generators are much better for overclocking, it won't matter in the least if you are not intending to overclock. But if you are not going to overclock, I strongly suggest that you get one of the Intel D850MV series of motherboards instead of the Asus P4T-E. That ensures getting a Northwood-compatible BIOS, and furthermore, the Intel board just can not be beat for 'stock performance' (and it's stable as a rock)! 😉
