P4S533 won't boot...please help!

A friend has a P4S533 motherboard w/a P4 1.8 & 512 mb ram running XP Pro.
He told me that when he powers up his pc, it goes straight to the bios screen for about a half second before powering off.
It did stay on the bios screen once & it said something to the effect about a frequency issue? He called me & I had him check the multipliers, vcore, fsb, etc & it all appeared to be normal (non-overclocked...never has been).
I did tell him to bump up the vcore voltage to 1.525 to see if that'll help. He had to leave so I don't know if it did or not.
Does anyone else have any ideas?

How about have him unplug the system from the wall and reset the CMOS, except I bet you had him do that already. Another possibility is that the power supply is failing... does he have any other decent PSUs in the house to test with? Ditto for the RAM. Might also have him try powering the board with no drives hooked up to either the board or the PSU, to see what effect a reduced electrical load has. Good luck!
 
OK...he can get to the desktop...sometimes. After the pc boots up to the bios screen to the pci frequency, which is highlighted @ 100/33. He exits out of the bios (without changing anything), it'll turn itself off & he has to unplug it from the receptacle (sometimes he has to do that 3 or 4 times). Sometimes it'll let him go to the desktop, sometimes it won't get past the bios screen.
Is there a way to test the power supply? I'm afraid I won't be able to duplicate this on a different brand motherboard.
Anyone?
 
If you suspect the PSU, $33 would get you a good-quality Sparkle Power unit: $33 shipped He could also try one stick of RAM at a time if his 512Mb is two sticks.
 
It wasn't the memory.
Once the pc gets past the bios screen, it runs like a champ, so I would think that would eliminate power supply problems. I have another friend who had practically the same problems (but with a different motherboard) & it was his motherboard.
How is Asus on RMA's? Has anyone dealt with them in the past?
