P4P800-E: help with front panel mic

I have the P4P800-E in this case and I believe I have the front panel mic/headset plugged correctly into the motherboard because I can use the headset without problems. But the mic just isn't working when I connect it to the front panel. It does, however, work when plugged into the jack on the back.

What am I missing here? What might I be doing wrong?

you have to be using onboard audio i think...

I am using the onboard ALC850 8-CH. I have the front panel (USB, headset, mic) connected to the motherboard properly. The USB works. The headset works. Mic doesn't work. Mic does work on other systems (via sound card).

I just feel like I'm missing something here that is probably new to me.

Oh yeah, also the mic works when connected to the back jack (onboard, just like the front).
