P4G8X BIOS 1004_014 Dated 02/26/03 Radeon Fixed ???

I could not find that this BIOS had been posted yet.

ASUS P4G8X BIOS 1004_014 Link Here

Many are reporting that this fixes the problems on Radeon 9500-9700 video cards with the Fast Write Enabled.

I just updated the BIOS and have not tested it for changes or updates yet. Will update after I have a chance to check it out.

Hi jhites, have you tried any USB2.0 devices on your P4G8X-Deluxe? I'm hoping that the bios change fixes this too, as I can scan w/ my scanner fine if I'm plugged into the Adaptec USB2.0 card, but not onto the mobo. That Radeon problem sure was annoying. I finally found the tip to turn FastWrites off 2 days ago.

What kind of cooling are you running to get 3.2GHz? I thought I was stable @166, but even two vcore bumps didn't help. Games kept locking up. I'm OK @ 155MHz though, but that's "only" 2.8GHz. i.e. what kind of temps do you float around? I need to ditch the stock fan I know...either that or stay happy w/ 2.8

Thanks, Randy

P.S. I emailed Asus about the USB problem too.

Been testing this bios version for a while with different settings.

Running at 174fsb currently with fast writes enabled and enabled write combining.
Memory timings are set to CL2-2-2-6 1T DRAM Idle Timer @ 16 clocks
All in Wonder Radeon 9700 Pro clocked at 339.75/325.25 = about 5% over default
I could not get stable at any overclock with bios v1003 fast writes enabled
16827 3DMarks

  • The Radeon problem seems to be fixed in this bios version (at least for me) 🙂
  • The memory timing settings in the bios still do not work - using wpcrset

Still testing for stability as I move the fsb back up to 178, which was my top
for Prime95 torture test using bios v1003. Actually getting better performance
at the 174fsb=3132Mhz right now.

I am not using any usb 2.0 devices but I do have 3 usb 1.1 devices hooked up.
I am running the vcore @ 1.65v Bios = 1.70v actual (1.69-1.71v fluxuation)
Stock air cooling on the Radeon
Alpha 8942 with 50cfm for the 2.4b

I haven't tried that new BIOS yet, if it's stable on your end maybe I'll try it and see if my USB2.0 problems go away. The email to Asus bounced.

My memory is set to 2-2-2-5 and the Idle timer is set to infinite. Not sure what the "Infinite" means, but the few o/c boards I looked at had it set that way. Although I see you're saying that the BIOS gets ignored, which I checked with the AIDA32 program. That says I'm really running at 2.5-3-3; I'll have to look that other program up too you mentioned.

I have the PCI bus running @36.33, which seems to be OK. Just under was OK, just over 37 MHz and Red Hat said that I had removed something. Overall a pretty fast board that keeps on going 🙂

That cas thing has been there on every P4 board Asus has made since the P4B266. It looks intentional, not a "bug". I doubt you will see a fix since they haven't fixed it on other boards. Heck, this even goes back to the Asus CUSL2 815 boards.

Yup - WpCredit or the tweak bios seems to be the only way around it.

The 1004-014 does seem to have fixed the Radeon problem, however.
Been running for about two days and have not got the 640X480 screen. 🙂

Krusher, if follow the steps on this thread I think your USB problem(s) will be fixed. This is a long thread. All you really have to be concerned with is the first page. The remaining 18+ pages provide some additional explanations if you need them.

I have the Gigabyte 8INXP and I was having USB problems before I followed this little guide.

Unfortunately for me, I got the 640x480 screen with fast write and write combining turned on. I think it happened the same day I updated the bios. I just turned them off again... no sweat.

I was looking at the 7205 mb's, but the apg problems scared me off. I really hope the bios updates fix this problem so I can begin looking at these mb's one again before buying.

It would be great if everyone with these mb's would keep us informed on this.

Well, the BIOS update didn't fix the USB problem, but I will try ShoNuff's suggestion probably tomorrow (since I haven't been feeling that great, I'm taking it easy.)

I'm trying the FSB @ 160, as Thugsroot and many others run at that speed fine. (166 was too fast for my fan.)

How does WpCredit change the memory timings? The latest one I could find was 1.20, and it just asks for which registers to edit...

1004-014 is running just fine for me so far

there is nothing new in the bios, it doesnt fix any of my minor bugs, and it does not run faster.

Okay I tried the BIOS update, it didn't seem to stop the "device failure" 800X600 screen for me. But I did go through that information that Kowan posted, and I'm now running at 2-2-2-5 fine, instead of 2.5-3-3-7. And my FSB is set at 160 now. Sandra tests at 3947/3946 instead of 3829/3842. I was not able to set my SDRAM Idle Timer to 16T as Thugsroot did, even before tweaking with WCPR... (Even at 155MHz FSB, I was seeing lockups.) So that seems to be the only setting that the BIOS does look at. I suppose I should figure out my USB problem now 🙂

Sorry for the non-replies.
Been down in Florida since Thursday.

No changes for me as far as any testing with Prime95, 3Dmark, etc.
I still have not gotten any screen changes going back to 640X480 but that might just be the new format and install that I did after I loaded the 1004-014 BIOS.

Did not fix any of the bugs on the board as far as I am concerned.
Memory timings still don't work, etc.

P.S. I've seen on other discussion websites, that with the Radeon cards (I have the 9500 Pro), 'UC' should be changed to "USCW" on most motherboards. My problems earlier were probably related to the "Fast Writes" setting then. I'm still looking for a good reason to change the PCI delay setting to 64 from 32, but should find that soon.

I couldn't get the USB2.0 drivers working right, i.e. scanner still has problems. However I did find out that the PCI latency timer basically states how long a PCI card can "hog" the bus to itself, most say that 64 is better than 32. The Asus web site has most of their links broken right now, for support and downloads. Maybe something new will show up when it's fixed. Thanks.
