P4C 2.4 @ 3.0 or XP2500+ @ 2.2 (3200+) ?

Hi

I'm not big into overclocking so I'd appreciate any opinions.

I'm looking at a replacement for my brother's computer, and when reading the Newegg customer reviews I noticed some very common overclocks for both of these processors. Using good DDR400 and good motherboards for both systems, a quick upping of the respective FSBs (166 to 200 on AXP and 200 to 250 on P4C) resulted in a massive performance increase. Reliable (and that's the key, no guessing games) XP 3200s and P4C 3000s for much less money. (Hence, the whole reason for OCing).

So, which budget overclocking setup would you choose, and why?

Thanks

AMD 2500+ because its half the price of an Intel P4 2.4C

Value for money AMD wins End of story.

I have been a hardcore AMD user but I just built a p4 system.. p4c 2.4 @ 2.95 is what i am able to be VERY stable at with 2-3-3-5 timings with ocz platinum 1gb pc3200 ratio 5:4.. i would recommend getting faster ram and getting 250fsb with 1:1 ratio if possible.. i vote for p4.. i love this chip

I'd need DDR500 for that, wouldn't I? Or can "slower" RAM reliably run that fast?

i would suggest ddr500.. but.. you could also do 5:4 like me with 3200 with tight timings.. i dont have any ddr 500 to see what the bench differences are

Budget? AMD... it's always been AMD for price/performance. You can get an AMD XP2500 and an nforce2 motherboard for the cost of a P4C 2.4 alone. And unless you do media encoding or 3D rendering, you're not going to notice a difference once they're both overclocked.

i got my mobo and processor for 200... like jeff said, the price of the processor alone... and the same performance. *when overclocked* Its easy.. go under the bios, switch the fsb to 200... probably wont need to touch the voltage, and you have yourself a xp3200, so so easy :D. Highly reccomend AMD, youll love it for the price/stability/performance

If your not big into overclocking than get an a64 3200+ and run it with that guru abit board. Itll still be faster than the pentium and only about 150ish more.

If you want the fastest "value" setup then the P4 is the best choice. It's definately faster and has Hyperthreading, which is great for multitasking.

However, the AMD setup is a much better deal and value for your dollar - you get a similarly performing system for considerably less.
