I'm attempting to oc my 1.6a to 2.4 ghz at 1.75vcore, however, during startup the computer stops starting up. The post test indicates a hardware error but I'm able to continue boot up by pressing F1. To alleviate these "stops", I went into the BIOS and disabled the Halt On command. The computer hasn't failed yet during Prime95 for several hours now.

Did the post test halt because the vcore was set to 1.75? Is it safe to leave the Halt On function off?

Disconnect any USB devices you have and more than likely it'll cure your freezing at POST. It's a bug in the BIOS.

Nate420,
I'm not using any usb devices at the moment but I will later for my digicam... As of now, I only installed a nic card and GF3 and using the onboard sound. To run stable at 2.4, I had to push the vcore to 1.75 and that's when the problem began. By turning off the HALT ON in BIOS the problem goes away but I don't know if it's safe to turn that off. If I lower the fsb and decrease the vcore, the problem also goes away but I like running at 2.4. Also, do you think 1.75 vcore is high? Thanks.

Well, the Vcore issues has been debated many times around here, but in the end it's all speculation. I personaly think that 1.75Vcore is pretty high, a little higher than I would be comfortable with. That's not to say that it will cause you any problems, it may run for 10 years at 1.75, but then again it may kill in in 2 or 3, who knows. Obviously you want to use the lowest stable Vcore, but if 1.75 is what it takes to hit 2.4, and 2.4 is the goal, then go for it. I just personaly wouldn't be comfortable running that high. I've seen people running P4s at 1.9 and higher.

I agree...I had my cpu at 2.5ghz at 1.775v and now I think she is dying...long story read other threads...pretty certain through my extensive troubleshooting...

I got greedy when I let my guard down and my common sense and listened to a fellow ATer blast me for talks on electromigration and not raising vcore past 1.7v....I had my chip at 2.4ghz at 1.65v and ran solid for 3-4 weeks...then bumped it up to 2.5ghz and 1.775v and 1 to 1-1/2 weeks later now she is dying...

After loosing stability I dropped it to 2.4ghz and it ran fine for 2 days then that no longer worked...then dropped it to 2.2ghz and then that stopped working...then dropped it some more...see a frekkin pattern????

I can't run it at 2.0ghz at 1.75v and get it to run stably...I am waiting for it to stop being stable at 1.8ghz any time now...

IMO and I think I can speak from experience do not go above 1.7v for anything and keep temps sub 50c, at least with asus boards that I am familar with...

I think I'll bring the speed down now that I've heard your story, Duvie. Thanks for the advice.
