P4b266-C or P4S533??

Please lmk what you guys think about these motherboards. I can get the P4S533 from newegg but they do not have the P4B266-C. It is available at atacom but they charge $14 for shipping 😀. Anyways please lmk what you think. Thanks
 
I've mulled this one over for a couple months. From what I've seen, the P4b266-c is able to push the fsb a little bit further than the the P4S533, which is limited to a max fsb of 166mhz. However, the P4b266-c has usb bugs when pushing the fsb past 150mhz(?).

I've chosen to go with the P4S533. Stay tuned 🙂

I'm having problems with the USB when the fsb is at 133mhz. It worked perfectly until I got a UPS that uses a USB connection. Now, with the UPS plugged into the computer, sometimes it will hang at verifying plug & play when loadnig the bios. I keep the UPS disconnected, hopefully when I upgrade this mobo i can plug it in again.

Just recently bought P4S533 with 1.6a CPU. Runs great, rock solid at 150FSB with 1.65 Vcore. I had Prime95 running for hours on end without crashing. BUt having problems going over 153FSB, system won't POST. It might be my PSU, 330W Enermax. I recently ordered a New PSU Enermax 465P. Hoping I can OC to 166FSB. 🙂😉
 
Well the P4S533 1.6A I am working on now I set at 160 FSB and it booted up but after a while it got very unstable, Running at default, The first one I had a 350 watt power supply and had to change it to boot to 160, I went with the Antec 430 true, I think if I build another one for someone I will tell them to go to a 550 but back to the one I am working with now, When it got unstable at 160 I looked and the temp was over 50C and the CPU fan speed was red and running at 1300 RPM's, It has the stock heatsink so I don't know if it is a bad fan or over clocking slows the fan, Could use some help from someone that knows, Like I have said I work mostly on AMD's, The P4S533 looks to be a nice board
 
I would get the P4S533 because you can do much more with it. You can upgrade using the newer 533 FSB processors AND you can run the RAM in asynchronous DDR400. That alone puts it out of the reach of the P4B266. And besides, the SIS 645 chipset is a proven leader.

This is a very valid question and if it has been asked before, then so what. It certainly deserves to be asked again with the problems some people have reported regarding the P4S533 and successes other have had.

If you want so badly to crap on someone's thread, go somewhere else.

That said, I certainly would opt for the 533 or the 266 without question. The 333 may be a consideration due to the stability, but I am hopeful that the P4S533 is a good board which a knowledgeable user with a good components will have great success with...
 
Good to hear Tates, I'm buying my P4S533 on Monday. Probably from www.mwave.com because they have the retail board in stock, unlike newegg who may only have the OEM and may be out of stock right now.

So far so good. On board sound is very good, board is stable and fast. Running the 1.6a @150FSB 1.6v and Intel retail heatsink. I'll be getting a ThermalRight AX-478 tomorrow, and we'll see how much farther it will go. Good luck with your new set-up 😀
 
Why not a nice i845 setup? An EPOX 4BDA or ABIT BD7 will allow a 3:4 mem ratio @ any FSB, and lock the PCI/AGP @ 33/66. This setup will outperform the two you are looking at by quite a bit. I run the EPOX with a 1.6A @ 150 FSB, 2.4 GHz DDR400.
 
I really like my P4S533 -- very easy to overclock -- not too loaded with excess options -- I have my 1.6a to 2.5 very very stable
 
🙂I realize the P4S533 is a good board but is the sis chipset as stable for running games and everyday software as the intel 845?
 
Yes, Ive played many days of games without a hiccup on my P4S533/1.6a combo.
Currently at 2512mhz(157fsb) and DDR at 392mhz

Thug: after reading on THG I haven't seen why I should buy an i845e board instead of something else. The only benefit seems to be the ICH4 controller that I don't think is worth the premium you pay for a board based on that chipset. I'll probably buy a Gigabyte 8RSX based on SiS 645: cheaper, performs well, lots of overclocking features, no cold boot problem, dual bios etc. Tell me why I should spend the extra $100 to buy the P4B533 and I may consider it... I'm more inclined to save on that and buy a 1.8a instead of a 1.6a for the same money...
 
Thug: I am probably going to grab a P4B533 within the coming week. Now, am I correct that if I am planning on overclocking, I should get the version without all the onboard "features" like LAN, Firewire, Audio?
 
Zukatah i had a SiS645 and couldnt get rid of it fast enough! it would only run my current CPU upto 145fsb. my i845D can run it upto 178fsb easy.
also price around a little - its not a $100 spread, and you only get what you pay for 😉

lung i personally dont like onboard anything , thats up to you tho.
 
Thug: Do you have any problems with your USB devices and how high can you go without doing to wire mod with your P4B266-C?
 
i dont use any USB so i cant comment on that.

this system went 170fsb 100% stable w/o a wire mod - or any mods.
it does have a PCI/AGP lock too.
