andreasl: wouldn't work I'm afraid.

[*]Firstly the RIMM riser was an Asus proprietary thing, everyone else just had it built right in. Though I suppose it might work with other boards...lets assume it does...

[*]Secondly the MTH chip was only for i820, even the i840 had a different chip to perform that same function (MRH-S). Though I suppose i840 and i850 have similar memory controller, so lets pretend for a minute that the i840 MRH-S would work with the i850...

[*]Finally, lets pretend that the i840's MRH-S would work in an i850 board and you could get a riser card with the MRH-S on it that would fit in an i850. There's still the fact that intel recalled any motherboards with MTHs on them, and issues RDRAM based i820s.

I see where you are coming from it would be neat to see, but I think it's very unlikely.

This isn't such an academic question to me (and Wingznut PEZ).

Intel is giving all it's employees a free computer in the next couple of weeks. We have a choice between a Pentium III 1GHz for free or a Pentium 4 1.4GHz for $200 more. Part of the deal is that we are requested not to sell the computer - as individuals, we can if we want, but we are requested by Intel to honor the spirit of the program and not sell it. I know for both Wingznut Pez and myself, we have both decided to opt for the upgrade.

It's not exactly an answer to the poster's question - since it's a choice between a 1GHz Pentium III and a 1.4GHz Pentium 4, but it's worth mentioning because it's pretty similar.

Honestly????

I would never buy a P4 with my own money, however, if its free, I would definately take it for its resell value. I would sell the P4 CPU, Board and the RAM and purchase Athlon KT133A replacements. I then would pocket or upgrade the system with the extra money(and alot of it)

Noriaki:
Hmmm ok... I wasn't sure either, but I thought it might work because 820, 840 and 850 all use the same RDRAM. I figured the riser card would actually be invisible to the memory controller (ie it thinks that there is an actual PC800 RIMM installed) sort of like a cable modem (mine at least) is invisible to the computer.

such a free gift is beneath me. but i'll take it from the store display when they aren't looking. i like to sweat for the finer things in life, it gives me that glow you see...
"phooey"

I would take the Pentium 4 simply because it costs more so I could sell it for a high price and buy myself an AMD Thunderbird system.

This is funny because if you take the P4 and accidentally booted it up and say for instance some how started playing a game it might be beside you for some time. And what if you found out that i850 chipset is rather sweet with that crappy RDRAM.
I don't know, just a thought. I would take the 1.5.

I'd take the Thunderbird. Taking the P4 and selling it is only a good idea if you've got someone who wants to buy it. I wouldn't risk it.

Take the Intel, The AMD chips are over-rated. There is no comparison in "real" world testing no matter what anyones opinion is- facts are facts.
BTW by "real" world i mean how the chips actually perform to end users like us. NOT what you read on some anti-intel sites.

p4 - i have a p3-700@1050 and a tbird-700@1236. i've used a p4-1.5ghz before, and i have to say that i was fairly impressed. wait until they actually develop apps that take advantage of the chip's power.

i would take the athlon and overclock it to like 1.4 or whatever i could...my a7v133 does a 1.2 at 1.5 with no problems with stability (ran rc5 for 24 hours) although it is running a little hot

I'd take the P4. I already got a Duron and an Athlon.

Definitely add more RAM, though.

If the Athlon had PC2100 DDR SDRAM, I'd take that instead. So I can use the RAM and the CPU later when I build an AMD 760MP system. 🙂 That's not exactly "selling," is it? Also in that case, I'd prefer a 1 GHz Athlon so that I have two 1 GHz Athlons for the dual system.

I'd go for the P4 myself. If I'm putting up my money for something then I'm going for Athlon every time, but your request was not to consider cost so I think that the P4 1.5 would edge out an Athlon 1.1 by a good bit.
