If I was to buy a P4 2.6 Ghz today, would I be able to upgrade to a 3Ghz chip next year after they are released and there is a price drop or is there no way of knowing at this point?

Yes. P4 2.6 will use the same socket as the P4 3.0.. just make sure you get a motherboarrd that will handle the 533Mhz FSB and you will be set for quite a while.

Well I will get a 533 Mhz FSB for sure, and will either get a 2.53 or 2.6 chip. Just want to leave my options open for future upgrades. Thanks for the reply.

Intel will be to 3 Ghz at around years end. Sometime in 2003 they plan on releasing a .09 micron P4 (Prescott). I do not know what they plan to do as far as socket size. Maybe someone else can answer that... but I would imagine the voltage will change. Might depend on a new BIOS from the manufacturer.

By the time you get a new P4, you might also wantt to take advantage of new advances in memory technology. I only do a major upgrade every couple of years, so I pretty much always plan on a MoBo and Memory too.

I am buying a whole new machine not just the chipset.

I am currently using a 2.5 yr old Micron that is a P3 733 Mhz so it's time for an upgrade :) Agree?

So it's bad then that I am still using a P3 500?...:) Actually currently I am looking at buying a new system. Just can't decide if I feel comfortable enough building.
