P4 question

Oyeve

Lifer
I am looking to get a P4 to go with my abit bl7raid. I need to know if the P4 1.6 512kcache is faster than the 1.7 256k cache. Or, if y'all can tell me what is the "sweet" cheap P4 chip to get. Muchos Gracias Amigos.

Budget quality system

1) Asus P4B-266c
2) Crucial 256mb PC-2100
3) P4 1.6a (will likely achieve 2.1) or P4 1.8a (will likely achieve 2.4)

Pricey quality system

1) Asus P4T-E
2) Samsung 512mb PC-800
3) P4 2.2a (should get close to 3ghz)

If you're going P4, either the 1.6A or the 1.8A are your best bet, if you're looking to overclock. I think the 1.6A is going for around 134 @ newegg.

The sweet chip right now is the 1.6a 512kb cache which can almost always be overclocked to 2.1ghz

The 1.6A with 512 KB of cache will generally be a bit faster than the 1.7 with 256 KB of cache. Go with the 1.6A - it is built on a 0.13u process and almost always OCs to 2.133 GHz. Some chips can make it up to 2.4 GHz if you are lucky.

Yes, the 1.6a is the best deal for performance right now. The 1.8a costs about $50 US more so I would stick with the 1.6a cause you can get 2.4 out of the 1.6a alot of times. The 1.6a overclocks higher in most respects than the 1.8a from the word from people, but that just might be because that most have the cheaper cpu.
