P4 question

I have read somewhere that you can buy an adapter to convert a non-P4 ps to a P4 ps. Does anyone have any experience with these adapters or know where I can get one. Also are these adapters safe because I don't want to burn out a $300 + system because I didn't spent a couple of extra dollars on a ps.
