P4 overclocking

Hey guys

Would taking my P4 2.8C to 3.2 GHz require tweaks to the vcore at all? Also, would running the chip 400 MHz quicker dramatically affect operating temperature? Or should my HSF (Gigabyte 3D Cooler Pro), handle it okay?

I believe that the Northwood's do overclock well, and so I thought I'd might as well give it a try...

If the chip has a decent stepping/S-code then it should overclock at least 400MHz without any/little change in the vcore. What motherboard do you have? Some might need a little more juice than others to overclock the CPU and keep it stable.

As for the heatsink, it'll be just fine 🙂 Temps are affected by change in voltages and crappy cabling 😉 As long as you have decent case cooling and airflow, then the CPU will be fine.

Welcome to AnandTech, BTW 🙂

Hey vegetto

Thanks for the welcome. My mobo is an MSI Neo2-S (865PE chipset). It has the D.O.T (Dynamic Overclocking Technology) function.

I have pretty good case cooling, and try to keep all my cabling as neat as possible too.

If you have good PC3200+ RAM, try slowly setting the FSB up to ~228/229 in 5-10MHz bumps, testing stability inbetween.

Yep. You should be able to do pretty well with that board and a good stepping chip. I would be shocked if it wouldn't go to 3.2 on stock cooling and default voltage.
