p4 or amd xp??? update!!!

should i go with the p4 2.4 or the xp2100??? I'm not afraid to over clock and I don't want anything to stand in my way. price isn't an option for me. I just want the fastest thing out. I know that the Amd chip is faster, but i've heard that the p4's overclock really well!!!

I will probably be using water cooling, I plan to go with whatever I can get my hands on, probably something pretty nice too😛
I'm also thinking of using the new epox 8k3a+ board,(I think that's the right one) and getting some OCZ 3200 ddr ram. I also am thinking about getting a geforce 4 4600 (probably the visiontek one, unless you guys think otherwise), and I will probably be water cooling the GPU also!!!

I can't wait to order all of this stuff!!!!!

Let me know what you think

if money is no object.. as of now the p4 2.4 is the fastest...although not by much...

so get the P.4 and a nice chunk of ram and overclock

If you're overclocking get the TH7II RAID and 2 sticks of low density 256MB RDRAM. Remember, low density is important. Shop around for it. It should say 16 device RDRAM or some such. And if you're lucky you might get a 2.8 GHZ P4. 😛 And I would definatley reccomend a good heatsink. Shop around for the Swiftech MCX478 or the Alpha P4 heatsink and slap it on there with a decent fan (40CFMs or so...) and that should help overclocking alot since at around 2.8GHZ the P4 can get really hot and the heatsink will be really important.

Ok guys. Some ppl are getting 2.4s from 1.6as right? thats like 800mhz increase. Whos to say that the 1.6 to 2.2 or so isnt the same processor w/ different multipliers? I know this guy said money was no object but come on thats a rediculous price increase from 1.6 to 2.4 for not that much performance

If you are going to blow that much money, sit on it for a couple of weeks. The P4's with a 533mhz front side bus are coming out real soon. A P4 2.4ghz/533mhz would destroy everything else if you pair it with a RIMM4200 module.

For right now, the P4 is looking very attractive due to the high overclockability of the 1.6A. If you know how to overclock these babies, you can get up to like 2.4 GHz, air-cooled.

RDRAM has also decreased a lot in price, making it very attractive for an upgrade.

Oh c'mon, Athlon XP 1.73GHz (2100+) STILL beats P4 2.4GHz and is VERY close to a P4 2.4Ghz with 533Mhz bus, and that's an Athlon at 670Mhz SLOWER and with 266MHz bus speed. Oh yeah plus another 250 - 300 to spend on that GF4 or hard drive, etc. I f you don't believe me, check out The Final Battle: P4/2400 vs. Athlon XP 2100+ (2400+) even the 2.5Ghz P4 at 533Mhz bus gets beaten, look at that 1.91Ghz (2400+) beat even the 2.6Ghz P4 with a clockspeed at 700Mhz SLOWER tells you something about Intel, and the P4, clockspeed is just for marketing hype now. Go Go AMD! (wait for the Clawhammer and Sledgehammer - Intel will probably wet themselves!)

Wrong!!!! The aticle states the 2100+ is at 2400+ speed...The 2100+ wins a few marks but in majority loses...It is the 2400+ that does well...No surprise...

I can pull many sites including this one you are frequenting now with your BS that show the correct information...

2100+ was near = to 2.2ghz p4 not the 2.4ghz...I agree for the cost it is still the price performance leader. However I have a 1.8 that will do 2.4(533fsb) and couple that with my ddr ram running at 400mhz ddr and at cheaper then a 2100+xp I can beat it in performance. The 1.8 retail with hsf is about 50 dollars cheaper then 2100+ oem chip w/o hsf...I don't care about mhz, I just care about perfromance per buck...That is the reason i owned amd's for the last year and just switched to the northwood. That and quieter and cooler running chip. I run it with 1 less case fan them my 1.4ghz amd and cpu cooler is 1/2 the noise...I love the new found silence

It is also no secret that mhz means nothing...it is also a product of IPC and athlon does well...has been so for the last year. You are preaching to the choir...

Clockspeed has ALWAYS been a marketing hype. From the days Intel had the lead over the PowerPC processor in Macs to when AMD had the MHz lead over Intel's P3 to the P4 now who has the MHz lead over the Athlon. Thinking that it is anything but a marketing method is just a being a dumb consumer under a false mentality. Perhaps that's why the P4 sparked so much emotion in these zealots. Their world of "ya mine's higher MHz" shattered and they're angry. Knowledgable people (surprisingly, these were Mac owners) knew all along that clockspeed didn't really mean anything.

One problem (as well as what Duvie said). That article is from tomshardware, I dont think anything else needs to be said.

Do tell. We're listening.

I'd say get a P4 and overclock it with watercooling if price is not a problem... The price is too hefty for me, but it seems to be the best way to get the top performer. A 2.4@3.0 sounds just fine with me....

If money is not an issue, top performance power train currently available is P4@2.4GHz on an i850 chipset mobo (e.g. Asus P4T-E) with PC800 RDRAM - 512MB or more.

I dunno about you, but I'd wait till the 533MHz FSB Chips come out cuz I dunno if you will be able to upgrade later if u take the 2.4GHz with 400MHz FSB (that's if u take the i850 chipset for you mbard like the Abit TH7-II).

You won't be able to buy 533MHz FSB Pentium 4's for at least another month, most likely longer.

Get what ever is the best bang for the buck. No since in throwing away money for the top of the line as the difference in performance doesn't justify the premium you have to pay for it. Unless you have disposable income and you don't mind Overclocking (you stated that you didn't mind) I'd suggest either the1.6a or the 1.8a P4. If you aren't going to OverClock then the XP would be a better buy as it's price performance value is better than any P4 that isn't Overclocked, at least from my perspective

BTW, I just picked up a 1.0A Ghz Celeron Tualatin for my multimedia box and when Overclocked to 133 FSB the CPU benchmarks for Sisoft Sandra are right up there with the P4 1.8 . Of course both the XP and the P4 with DDR and the P4 with Rambus kill it in the Memory benchmark. Still for around $60.00 I was fairly impressed. Unfortunately my board doesn't support any Vcore adjustment and I had to tune it down a little to get it to run completely stable (probably the only 1.0A Celly that doesn't run stable at 133 FSB)

I'd hold off on a P4 until we figure out how to reliably grab the newest stepping. With the 2.4Ghz's doing 3GHz air-cooled it may be worth it to wait a couple of weeks.

<< AMD is far better >>

Well at least according to those who work at Round Table

Dont bother with AMD's current stuff, there fastest processor runs SOOOO hot its not even funny. Wait for the 533mhz fsb P4's, or .13 micron stuff from AMD, processors are starting to run really hott and it's getting annoying :disgust:.

Who cares if it runs hot? As long as it OC's well and you know how to put a fan on, it doesnt make any difference
