Intel wants the i845 to appeal to the masses as a result of the lower price, not performance. In short, Intel could give a hoot how much performance comes out of a 2.0 GHz P4 i845 solution, as long as it sells a lot and is stable.

Has anyone seen any recent articles about the i845 boards, other than the one at Tom's from a couple months ago?

The average Joe won't know any better, that's why. It provides OEMs and such with a low-cost path to Pentium 4. Joe Blow won't realize he'd be better off with the P3 1GHz system these vendors are currently hocking for even a few dollars less. It's sad, but utterly true.

Wingz: nope, haven't seen too many i845 reviews. A few previews, but no real reviews. I suppose that makes sense though, because the chipset is marketed towards the average Joe who won't be reading these reviews anyway. Enthusiasts won't even consider i845.

Wingz posted this same question in another i845 thread. Here are a couple of reviews that I posted in response:

AT was able to get in two benchmarks with the i845. Hardocp has done several tests with the i845 here and in other reviews here (this one is much better than the previous hardocp link I gave you). I've seen other sites too with i845 tests, but am feeling a bit too lazy to go find them.

I consider myself the "Average Joe", but I do know that no matter how fast your hardware can go if there isn't any decent OS, we still going no where. (anyone thinking about attacking our 32bit OS? ;) )

I know what you are saying and I'm certainly not looking at an i845 SDR solution. However the boards have been out for a few weeks now and nobody has reviewed one, that's just slack IMO. I am certainly very interested to see how the i845s actually shape up on released boards. It is a computer hardware sites responsibily to review the good, the bad and the ugly
