P4 Installation question

I bought the retail version of the P4 1.8. I'm trying to install the heatsink/fan over the chip but there's this black (tape?) type thing right over where the chip touches the heatsink. Do I remove it or leave it on? What does it do? Does it take the place of the heatsink paste, seeing as Intel did not include any syringe with paste in the retail box?

the "tape" stuff is on the heatsink right?

it's probably the thermal pad that is required...(kinda like thermal paste except almost solid)

I'ts VERY important to keep that there if so.

Just make sure there's not clear tape over it...sometimes they cover it with tape for transport

Nope, there was no clear tape or anything of the sort on there. Just the black tape that I guess is the thermal pad. Thanks, Sohcrates.

Its the themal pad. I had mine on there till i wanted to get the OC past 2.4ghz. Does fine up to there.

I tried ocing the 1.8A but it would lock up at anything over 100FSB. Do I increase the core voltage right now? What should I increase it to? I'm using Crucial PC2100 DDR ram.

huzefa1: If your system is the same as that listed in your sig, with a P4T motherboard and not a P4T-E, are you sure that you have a Northwood 1.8A processor and not a Willamette 1.8?
