(!) Time to buy that tropical fish tank water pump for cooling like the man from overclockers.com! Wonder what that sounds like in action?

what a waste of material...

anyway, that's one TALL heatsink... no wonder it needs to be mounted to the chassis

Hmm, no thanks sharkeeper, I've barely rescued my CPU from water condensation caused by an insufficiently isolated Peltier. Even if the liquid is isolated, I certainly believe your price estimates :)

I do plan to install Alpha heatsinks on my P3/450 and upcoming Thunderbird (which does dissipate less heat than the original Athlon). Quite honestly, I may wait for AMD Palomino (heir to Tbird), which will have way less power consumption.

By the way, I STRONGLY agree with those of you criticizing the increased cooling requirements. A properly designed CPU (as well as videocard) ought not to require fans for proper operation. Such a requirement reveals an upmarked, and hence defective product. :|

yeah it looks like the Alpha may still be the best for sockets.. ah well.

I've gotta wonder if AMD is holding anything back (tweak wise) for these next gen CPUs.. I wouldn't be surprised, becuase if they did, then they could release a faster mhz-mhz version along with a die shrink.. oh well, we'll see.

What about the Athlon though? It uses great ammounts of power, even at the lowest clockspeeds.. It's just apart of it's design... :Q

I hope when the Mustang core derrivitives come out, we will see a nice drop in power requirements...

I think it may be significant, especially if we're going to be seeing Mobile Athlons.. There's no way a mobile Athlon could draw even 30W. Your batteries would last about a half an hour. heh

Yes Soccerman I was talking about the pics that NFS4 posted. OK, they might be a bit taller, but that's about it. Not much bigger than the original/current Orbs. Their specs are quite crap too, 0.48C/W sucks compared to Alphas and Globalwins, which can have as low as half of that figure.
