I will install later this evening and give you guys a full report. I will be using this on a 1.6A o/c to 2.4 with a Sunon 39CFM 32db fan on an Asus P4B 266.

GCS, how are you going to install the fan. Up as the instructions suggest or down so that it blows air on to the heatsink? Keep us posted.

Well per instructions (and previous Alpha experience) & advice from 2cool I installed the fan so that it is drawing air off of the hs.

After a short time of being back up idle temps and full load temps are at least 4 degrees C cooler than before.

I will say this about the Alpha - its big, its heavy and its on securely! That being said its a hs that once its on you are going to be swapping CPUs in a matter moments. This baby requires some time and after for removal and reassembly.

Outside of that its quite nice and the Sunon fan I have with it is not very noticeable.

I am installing the P4 Alpha 8942 right now on an Asus P4B266/ Intel 1.6A and have had a difficult time of it. Is it normal for the motherboard to look a little bowed around the area where the Alpha is installed? When I look down the edge of the P4B266 it looks a little bowed where the Alpha is attached to the cpu. Could it be from over-tightening the Alpha or is this the norm for a big and heavy hsf such as the Alpha?

Also, according to the install instructions for the Alpha, it calls for the fan to blow out from the hsf and not in towards the cpu as usually is the case. Is that what most P4 Alpha users are doing?

Thanks.

When I installed my Alpha there was a slight bow in the board as well. It will strighten out when you tighten the board down. And yes the Alpha is designed to suck from the HS. Blowing onto it will cause your fan to backwash. You can also help your cooling out by attaching an exhaust fan right next to the Alpha if you have a spot. I did that and dropped 5c from my CPU temp. With the fan sucking away it was causing a little hot pocket around the HS so that exhaust fan got all that hot air out. See a pic here.
