P4 560 heat issue !!!!!!!!!!! HELP!

So I'm trying to hold out for a while before I build a new system. I just noticed when i was searching through my bios that my puter was running at 60C. Yikes I did some research and downloaded TAT...but it won't work since my chip is an engineering sample.

Any other good software for charting temps at idle and full load?

Also what should I do to run the cpu and full load? Run some kind of program or software.

I think maybe the heatsink might be borked. I used the thermal paste that came with the fan. Any suggestions?

Arctic Cooling MK1. I never liked silicon stuff. What kind of exhaust/intake do you have?

hmmm well its a generic case. Has a fan in the front, a fan in the back, and a fan on the side. I think front and side are 90mm and back is 120mm.

So I was trying to task my cpu and was playing CS:S while listening to music and copying a buncha files.

Temp peaked at about 74C and stayed up there until I came back out to the desktop. I downloaded a program called speedfan. At idle its right around 50-55C.


Funny you mention the exhaust because I was looking into getting anew case. I'll have to do some more research on them to get a good one. I wonder if I should try to reseat the heat sink. Clean off all the thermal paste and try the Arctic cooling stuff. I think I have some laying around here somewhere.

A 120mm exhaust should, in theory, be enough for that huge cooler of yours.

Hmmm yeah jeez I dunno maybe that is normal operating temps for a prescott. I've been doing some research and everywhere I go it says they run around 50 idle and 70 under load.

Is there a program or anything I can use to crank up my cpu usage?

Wow how frustrating. I downloaded Prime95 and Throttle watch. I guess the prescott's add some idle cycles in if the processor starts getting to hot. So I crank up prime 95 and start playing CS:S and the results are shown below.

LOOK AT ALL THAT THROTTLING. That is so irritating. I built this puter about 8 months ago to play BF2. It was a warm summer and I could never figure out why people with more dated components than mine could play BF2 with all the settings on high. I think this throttling just solved that mystery. I also found an article on Toms hardware where they has a bunch of heat issues with the 560.

Wow I didn't realize this processor was that old. It's been sitting in my desk for a while now. Eh maybe i'll upgrade sooner than I thought. Thanks for all the help

While the 5xx series prescotts do run very hot, shouldn't be 60c in bios, especialy not with that heatsink. More than likely it's not making good contact. Put it under full load, and feel the base of the heatsink. If it doesn't feel hot..it's not making good contact.

Wll according to the bios it was idleing at 60C, but according to speedfan it was 50C. So I think I believe speedfan....er I hope its the right one

Speedfan is going to read from the same sensors that bios reads from..probably have a fan speed control in your bios that doesn't kick in until you've booted up. What are you load temps when running Orthos or 2 instances of prime95?

Heh well due to extreme laziness I finally go around to putting the arctic silver stuff on the cpu about 20 minutes ago.

a bit cooler

I'm about 5C cooler at idle and 10C cooler under 100%cpu usage. The best part is no throttling now.

It still seems high, but I'm thinking my case has some horrible airflow inside. It's some cheapie generic case. I'd worry about it more, but my C2D e6700 is here...waiting on the antec 900 and some other crap. thx for the help.


I just wanted to give an update if anyone else is having the same issues.
