P4 530 or Athlon 64 3000+ (s939) ?

I'm looking at either of these configuration:

1. P4 530 (3 Ghz) + ASUS P5P800 + 512 MB DDR
2. Athlon 64 3000+ (s939) + ASUS A8V-DX + 512 MB DDR

Which one should get me a better value (price/performance). This would be for upgrade from an old P3 1.1 GHz, and I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon after (thinking of keeping this setup for the next 2-3 years).

The price of both configuration is about the same (give or take $10 Canadian).
The video card will be a Radeon 9800 SE which I'm not looking to upgrade at all.

Primary use: web browsing, strategy gaming, and office apps.

the a64 is nicer than my p4 at around 3gig - the p4 seems sluggish and a64 totally instant when opening IE etc heeehee

My current system is powered by Enermax 300W PSU.
I have two Western Digital 80 GB HD, a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM, and a Radeon 9800SE vid-card
(I'll be using the onboard LAN + Audio in either case)

Will I have to replace my PSU if I go with either of these two config?

As long as that power supply doesn't have really low amperages on the 12v rail, and i don't think it would, should support those CPU's. And go with the A64, its the best for the money.

Does anyone know what's the future (in term of future upgrade) does the socket 939 had?
Cause I thought I read somewhere that it might be replaced as soon as AMD had a dual core processors out. I'm thinking of sometime in the next 2-3 years.

Also does anyone know whether or not we will see a price drop in term of processor price or motherboard price for the Athlon 64?

Edit: Or should I just go with the socket 754 instead and save some money that way, with the thought that within the next 2 or 3 years the current platform will be out of date anyway. Cause I think PCI Express will start to dominate within a year or so. Beside I don't think the dual channel memory of s939 will give that much of performance boost anyway.

Depending on your budget.

An OC'ed Sempron 3100+ (s754) system should be enough for next 2 or 3 years. It is very good in price/performance ratio & is able to upgrade to s754 Athlon64 if you need 64-bit later. 🙂

Save your bucks for the future major platform upgrade (s900 + PCI-E + DDR2 & maybe with dual-core too).
